SO much more efficient than screenshots. I've had a Mac since 1984 but I never fail to learn something new from you. Thank you, Gary!

I can see where this could be really handy. Thanks for the great pointer! I’m always impressed (and somewhat baffled) how you come up with these obscure tips.

Thanks, Gary! Much better than what I've been doing which is take a screenshot > Open in Finder > look through the list in Finder of recent files (all, of course, with meaningless names) > drag into Mail or Messages > then stumble across it later and wonder if it is important, having forgotten to delete it at the time.

Great info! Remember, Shift Command 5 offers the ability to select any area, although it is just an image; however, it can open the selection as a PDF, and in Ventura, even an image's text can be selected.

Very effective use of Preview. This will save time and importantly allow creating files that only have the portion you need without saving multiple copies.

Awesome! I always learn something new from you. Like we say, there is always more than one way to skin a rat, I used to use " Shift, Command, 4 " to take a selective screen shot.

Is there not a way to simply highlight a portion of a page and print it directly? Seems that would be a very efficient way of printing selections.

Very helpful video, Gary. I have a subset question, though. What if you want to only copy a sentence or two, and not the entire block that you chose. Is that possible?
@macmost

Not sure what you mean. If you want to copy some text, just do that in the document itself. Not sure how that relates to printing.

Seems like this would be useful for images or websites where the layout makes it hard to highlight the text i want to print Although im not sure if there is really any benefit for websites or documents where i am able to highlight the text i want to print

Hi Garry, yet another great video. it amazes me how you find these gems. I have been asked to print some copies of finance agreements taken with a phone camera on a full A4 page. that means a page totally full of ink. Is there any way that such an image can be manipulated into a simple document as if done on a scanner thereby using substantially less ink. I have my doubts but if anyone knows then I would bet money on you knowing how. I’m have my fingers crossed for luck
@macmost
@macmost Жыл бұрын
Try creating a new document in Pages that is A4. Then bring each image onto a page. Use the image adjustment tools to get the brightness and contrast so that the white areas are very white so they don't use any ink. Experiment with one page until you get it as good as you can.

Didn’t there used to be a program for safari where you could select an item and then print that selection?
@macmost
@macmost Жыл бұрын
You can do it with developer tools, but it is hit or miss depending on the site.
@lenmueller9702
@lenmueller9702 Жыл бұрын
That is a lot of steps. If I want to print a selection I “command/shift/4” to select what I want and then print my screenshot.
@macmost
@macmost Жыл бұрын
If that works for you, fine. But you are then printing an image (pixels) from your screen at a much lower resolution. Doing it right shouldn't take any longer once you get the hang of it.

What is the advantage of doing this versus using a screenshot tool like Shottr or Xnip and printing the selection you screenshot?
@macmost
@macmost Жыл бұрын
First, there's no reason you need to use a third-party app to screenshot. You can do that with the built-in macOS screenshot tool. But either way you get an image, made of pixels, of what is shown on the screen. So you lose some resolution. Things won't look as good when printed.
@teamvigod
@teamvigod Жыл бұрын
@@macmost Yes if printing the resolution will be at screen resolution so not as good. That's a valid point. I use Mac built in screenshot sometimes but find that Shottr and Xnip can do certain things easier (scrolling webpage snapshots, remove objects, Text recognition, screen ruler, zoom) plus it has all the mac markup type stuff. I mainly started using these for scrolling webpages. I know w/safari you can do a save page as PDF workaround but if I just need to get an entire scrolling page fast or part of the scrolling page the apps are a quicker tool to get certain things like that done. I do like the stuff you showed with selecting portions and saving that out at full quality PDF when necessary! Good stuff. Thanks.

I was trying to find a way to "Print image at top of sheet". If I could do that I could save 50% on paper. 1Hr. later: I found that printing 2-up, then auto rotate, will force print to top of sheet.

I have a question. Maybe you have a video for this? I get an email with the invoice and you see the whole thing. But when I go to print it half the prices/writing (at least a few letters or numbers) on the far right is missing and reducing doesn't change anything? It is that way in the preview and when you print the page. Can't figure out how to get it to print the whole page.

@macmost Жыл бұрын
Sounds like it is a PDF file attached to the email, right? Have you tried opening the PDF up first, then printing?
@airpilikia
@airpilikia Жыл бұрын
@@macmost I don't think it is a PDF. It is just the email of the invoice. It is all there in the email but when I click the print button and it all pops up and the preview window shows the invoice, and everything(2 or 3 or more letters/numbers) on the right is missing. Maybe a setting in the email itself?
@macmost
@macmost Жыл бұрын
@@airpilikia First, figure out if it is a PDF. That is important. Can you select the invoice part of the message like it is an attachment? Can you double-click it to open it? Can you Control+click it and get options like Open With Preview? If it is an attachment, then open it in Preview and print from there. If not, then print and try adjusting the scaling down from 100% to see if it makes a difference. Try other things like using Landscape mode too. Look carefully at the preview to the left to see what works before wasting paper to test.

The way I have been doing this is to take screenshots of each area of a pdf then save them as individual PNGs then bring these PNGs into Pages and create a consolidated document then export the Pages document as a pdf. A lot of steps but it works fairly well.
