As a seasoned fish farmer, I've learned that one of the key factors in achieving success with catfish farming is the regular sizing of the fry. This process is crucial as it allows us to segregate the larger, faster-growing fish from the smaller ones. By doing so, we can ensure that the larger "shooter" fish don't end up consuming the smaller fry, which can significantly impact our overall yield.
In my experience, I've found that catfish fry can vary greatly in size, even within the same batch. This is why it's essential to take the time to carefully sort and separate the fish into different tanks or basins based on their size. The larger, more dominant fish are placed in one container, while the smaller, slower-growing individuals are housed separately. This approach helps to create a more balanced and harmonious environment, where each fish has the opportunity to thrive without being overpowered by its more aggressive counterparts.
The Art of Natural Catfish Breeding
Many aspiring fish farmers have asked me about the process of breeding catfish, and I'm always happy to share my knowledge. While there are several options available, such as hormone injections or artificial fertilization, I prefer to take a more natural approach.
In my operation, I simply place the mature, pregnant female catfish together with the male fish in a dedicated spawning tank. This allows the natural breeding process to occur, without the need for any invasive procedures. The key is to ensure that the female fish are truly ready to spawn, as this will greatly increase the chances of a successful breeding event.
One of the challenges with catfish breeding, however, is maintaining the fry population. It's not uncommon for the initial batch of 2,000 to 3,000 fry to dwindle down to just a few hundred within a matter of weeks. This is where the importance of regular sizing and segregation comes into play. By separating the faster-growing "shooters" from the smaller fry, we can help ensure that a greater number of the offspring survive and thrive.

Dexter you don’t need to Size Tilapia because they don’t eat each other , you only need to make sure they are not overcrowded and you can slow down their reproduction rate by adding Salt to the Water or by adding neem leaves
