Best garage sales and estate sales are the ones you find that don't advertise on Craigslist. But Craigslist is a good way to get going.

I do this all the time, never had to drive more than 15 miles. I once found a 14k lady's watch with small diamonds. Had it cleaned and it worked fine, payed $3.00 for it.

You could also always ask from female sellers if they have at home broken jewellery etc. if you do not see any on sale. Lots of people do not realize that people actually buy this stuff and they do not even put them on the table. I got my own broken jewellery in a box waiting for little bit better gold and silver prices, but if someone would come and knock my door asking for that stuff I might even sell them.

You should bring a STRONG MAGNET too. Some things are marked as gold or silver, but are not actually precious. A good magnet will pick those out easier than anything else.
