How to Program A Chevrolet Malibu Smart Key Remote Fob 2013 - 2016

A step by step video on how to program a smart key remote fob to a 2013 - 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.

1. Using the driver's door, turn the key counterclockwise to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds.The Driver Information Center(DIC) displays REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
2. Wait for 10 minutes until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button. (You may have to open and close drivers door to see the DIC display). The DIC display will again show REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
3. Repeat Step 2 two additional times. After the third time all previously known transmitters will no longer work with the vehicle. The DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button. (You may have to open and close drivers door to see the DIC display). Remaining remote key fobs can be relearned during the next steps. The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE # 1.
4. Place the new smart key fob in the transmitter pocket in the center console .
5. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When the transmitter is programmed, the DIC display will show that it is ready to program the next remote key fob.
6. Remove the smart key fob from the transmitter pocket and press unlock or lock on the transmitter.
To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 4-6. When all additional transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to exit programming mode.

Great video, procedure seems simple enough. Got a question for ya - I just bought an '18 Malibu, it came with 1 working fob. So far it seems like there are procedures to follow if you have zero, or two working fobs. I was wondering, is there an option to program a second fob given that I've already got the one working?

Yes you are correct, in your owners manual your will notice those are the only two options for programming procedures. However, you can use this procedure, you just need to reprogram in your working fob. If you look at the steps in the description box, or your owners manual, you will repeat steps 4-6 for each remote.

With this procedure, you need to re-program any existing remotes during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for the working key after the "new" key is programmed.

No - unless it has been unlocked or "flashed" by someone with the correct equipment. The remote fobs lock to a vehicle once programmed.

They original key fob will need to be reprogrammed during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video - you need to repeat steps 4-6 for your original remote after the new one. If the vehicle shows ready for "remote 1" but does not respond to the remote - there may be an issue with the remote you are trying to use. I would try programming the original remote as Remote 1 to determine that.

This worked good for my 2017 Chevy Malibu Premier! Took like 40mins to do, wish it was a faster process!!!! I had one transmitter and 2 cut keys. I like your video but the emblem on the middle of the steering wheel looks like a Cadillac not a Chevy. The emblem on the middle of my steering wheel actually looks like a Chevy not a Cadillac. Also the pocket to place the transmitter in located in the center console is not there. I have a different pocket on the back side of the center console and the transmitter won't fit. Finally certain dash controls, turn signal indicator controls as well as steering wheel controls are completely different on my 2019 Chevy Malibu. If I could figure out how to attach pictures to my comment I would. Other than these inconsistencies, good video.

It is a Cadillac XTS in the video. The same procedure works on many different GM vehicles. The pocket in your center console that you are seeing on the backside is what you need to use. You can also find this procedure and see a diagram of the transmitter pocket in your owners manual. Followed the directions for a 2021 Chevy Malibu. Everything works as shown except that after programming the 1st remote, a message appears that it's ready for Remote 2. It will not allow you to reprogram the same remote, and if you don't have another remote, you will need to press the start stop button for 12 seconds again to exit the programming mode.

Funny thing is, it then asked for a 3rd remote, so the newer model cars are equipped to program more remotes. My 2017 malibu is stuck in learning mode. After i hold the start button down for 12 sec the new fob will work but says *service theft deterrent system* and the little lock stays on the cluster. After I turn the car off and walk away for approximately 10-15min when I open the door it says *ready for remote 2* It will not start now. But if I hold the start button for 12 sec it will allow it to start again. Anyone have an idea?

I have a question, is this programming works in Malibu 2019 LS also? And if I will buy a Malibu LT 2019 remote control is it possible to program it to my Malibu 2019 LS so I can use remote start on my Malibu 2019 LS?

This will work on a 2019, however on a 2019 you have to program at least two keys during the procedure. The remote needs to match your vehicles options, the remote start fob will only work if your vehicle is set-up for remote start.

If you already have one working fob, you can use this procedure you will just need to re-program in your existing fob after your new fob, as it will be erased during the procedure. If you look at the steps in the description box, or your owners manual, you will repeat steps 4-6 for each remote additional remote after the new remote is programmed. You can just use the mechanical key from your existing fob that is already cut.

I had a 2019 Traverse that I traded for a 2017 Malibu. The Malibu had only 1 fob so we kept 1 of the Traverse key fobs hoping to reprogram it. I can get the original fob to program with this process but it doesn’t seem to work on the Traverse fob as a 2nd one. Are they compatible?

These fobs lock to a vehicle once they are programmed and have to be flashed by someone with the correct equipment before they can be used again

Think you! You saved me some serious coin the dealer ship was talking around $600! for a new key phone and programming! When they charge that much why would they want to make quality vehicles, it's a damn shame

Can I use a FOB from a different vehicle to reprogram for my 2017 Chevy? It is the same. For some reason I received 3 Fobs with my new Equinox. I’ve lost my Fob for my Malibu.

All u gotta do is hold the start button for 12 second again ...and then hit the brake and start it up like normal

The remote needs to match the vehicles options. If you bought a remote with remote start then the dealership would need to add remote start in order for it to work.

Some vehicle only show the message for a few seconds right when the door is opened. You might try just continuing with the procedure on just go off of the time.
