This took me a long time to understand so I want to make it clear to everyone: â din a and â din i are the same sound. They are just written as different letters depending on the word. The reason, from my understanding, for this is dependent on the etymology of the word. So if it's a word where the original vowel was an A, say from its Latin origins, it would be "din a", and vice versa. It's just that over time the sounds converged in the spoken language, even though they were spelled differently. Please correct me, if I'm wrong.

you´re wrong. It depends of the position in the word. Înger derives from angelus.

@@RomanianHub I see, thank you for clarifying. I wonder why it is like that... What's the practical use of having two different letters for the same sound? For me the sound was always closer to an I than an A, therefore hard to identify sometimes.

@@mandatorialThe practical use is to preserve Latin spelling. That what în or împărat resemble their Latin root words in or imperator instead of being written as ân or âmpărat. Same with â for Român (Roman) instead of Romîn.
