In Italian, many consonants have either a soft sound (as in "note") or an intense one (as in "notte"). Producing an intense sound requires a long blockage of the airflow in the mouth, thus bringing more energy to the consonant sound. When the stressed vowel comes before a double consonant, the vowel is produced quickly and is followed by a short pause. If there is a single consonant right after the stressed vowel, then that vowel will be a long one.
