Even as a "haole", I am always frustrated when people call O'ahu's capital "Hana-lulu" instead of HONO-lulu. It's so very obvious that are no "a's" in the word! This channel is awesome and I wish other islanders would also take the time to correct their sloppy pronunciations. Hawaiian is such a beautiful language and respect should be shown when using it.

It seems even locals who should know better are saying HAnolulu. So annoying.

Auwe! I’ve seen so much videos with people posting how to “correctly pronounce Hawaiian words” and they still say Hawai’i as Ha-why-ee and Honolulu as Hana-lulu. Mahalo nui loa for posting this aunty and showing the keiki and others how to correctly pronounce these words.🤙🏽

I'm from Hawaii, but found myself driving through the French Pyrenees near the Spanish border and basque country. I was on a toll road but forgot my ticket and had to communicate, as best I could, to the toll attendant where I entered the road so he could charge me accordingly. The only landmark I could remember was the one I could pronounce: the town of Pau. I speak no French, but I absolutely crushed the pronunciation. He understood, I paid, and the situation was all pau. Hawaiian is highly practical around the world!

Thank you so much for this video! I’m going to Oahu next month and coming from Aotearoa (New Zealand) it’s so important for me to embrace and learn some of the correct pronunciations! Watching this video, it’s actually really easy because in nz, our indigenous people (Māori) have the exact same vowels and accent (just slightly less American sounding). You should look up some yt vids about the New Zealand Māori culture, our people originated from the same place and have huge similarities in culture! Same with places like Fiji 😊🙌🏽

Luana, may I ask where you got that lovely "Aloha is spoken here" sign? I have seen similar ones sold as a 'tourist' souvenir but this one is very classy and I would love to have one like yours on display among my books and photos in my Hawaiiana room. Mahalo!

The Hawaiian vowel system seems to have a lot in common with Spanish and Japanese. Pure vowels, no diphthongs, no "uh" sound. And just five, not the score that English has. And the vowel sounds are as-written, like Japanese and Spanish, unlike English, which has five vowel letters to represent maybe twenty distinct vowel sounds.' English is a bad starting point to be able to pronounce Hawaiian words correctly.

When she pronounced the 5 Hawaiian vowels, it sounded pretty much like the 5 Spanish vowels.
