Hello! I'm John Russell.
Let's continue exploring common questions and phrases related to travel.
Today, we will learn about a useful question to know when you take a taxi or train, or even ride a bus.
Our question is this:
How much is the fare?
Let's pay careful attention to the last word in our question: fare.
Fare is a noun. It means the price that is charged to transport another a person or a group of people.
We can closely examine the individual sounds in "fare" to improve our pronunciation.
We have a consonant sound: f
To make this sound, you put your lower lip under your top teeth, like this:
f
f
Then we have the rest of the word:
-are
-are
-are
When we put everything together, we get this:
fare
fare
Now let’s work on pronouncing the question word “how.”
We have this consonant sound:
H
H
And then we have this vowel sound:
-ow
-ow
Let’s put it all together:
How
how
Let's imagine we are traveling. We need to ask an employee on a train how much a ticket costs.
We can ask this:
How much is the fare?
How much is the fare?
Please note that our word of interest today, fare, is spelled "f - a - r -e."
It is easy to mix it up with another word spelled "f - a - i - r."
Although the words have different meanings, they are pronounced exactly the same.
That's all for today! Keep up the good work.
