I've spent the last 3 weeks watching the Tour on English-language Eurosport and also on Irish television. I think I may have heard 10-15 different pronunciations from the commentators for Vingegaard's name. Apparently none of them were correct 😁

5:56 Å is actually a Swedish letter and was introduced in 1948 to strengthen our Nordic bonds as well as to distance ourselves from our German neighbours. It took about half a decade for us to decide where in the alphabet to place it, though :D

His name has made me laugh throughout the tour because I live in a town called Overgaard in America. We just pronounce the double aar phonetically, as typical Americans would...I always figured it was pronounced wrong. In fact many people from out of town misspell it Over-gaurd. I don't think I will lead the charge to correct the pronunciation any time soon. I believe it was named after some 19 century lumberjacks.

It could very well have been a lumberjack of Danish descent. There are about 4500 people with that family name in Denmark. It is a habitational name for someone who lived at ‘the upper farm’.

Hi Ramon! They are fairly similar, but in Danish we would put the tongue down. You can let the tip of the tongue touch below the lower teeth, or even more in the back of the mouth, at the "root" of the tongue. But in a relaxed way 😉 Does it work, does it sound Danish?

I heard that he pronounces his surname when he speaks English as [bierg], but in danish it sounds a little bit odd, like [bia:o] or something like that, with an O or even U sound at the end. how to pronounce it correctly?

"Synes godt om" is Danish for "Like" - the 'i' has been skipped in "synes godt om". 'I like this' is translated into "Jeg (i) synes godt om (like) dette (this)", which would make the sentence way longer than "Synes godt om" (like), but both is easily understood by a Dane, so Facebook just chose the shorter translation for convenience. The word 'likes' could also be translated to "Synes godt om-tilkendegivelser" (like declarations) instead, but I guess it's just too long and people understand "Synes godt om" (like) anyway. Also if you see a post with "46 synes godt om" it's actually perfectly translated. It would be "46 likes" in English.

​@@Ben-bl5rc Not really, they both mean the same. Interestingly enough, the use of "lide" would be way more normal to use in a day to day situation, compared to "synes godt om". You would probably never catch a Dane say: "Jeg synes godt om kagen, som du har bagt" which would mean "I like the cake, that you baked", while hearing someone say the sentence "Jeg kan godt lide den kage, du har bagt" which means the same in English, would sound way more normal.

@@Ben-bl5rc Yeah, even though "Jeg kan lide" on itself would mean "I like" it´s very normal to say "Jeg kan godt lide" instead, which, as you said, if translated literally, would mean "I can good/really like". I guess we Danes have just adopted this way of using "Jeg kan "godt" lide" to differentiate it from the verb, "Lide" which is spelled the same way. "At lide", would mean "to suffer" in English, which is basically the opposite of what you would be trying to say! : )

well, the e should be easy to pronounce, at least physically. But of course, first one needs to know how it should sound. Like ea in learning is pretty close. TheEnglish transcription you provided might be useful to some, but it's never gonna be more than an approximation. I myself never provide those for the same reason. That for your comment!

8 minutes about one name and I still can't pronounce it properly. Let's face it, that every nation will have it's own way to pronounce some words, I don't expect Danish to pronounce proper polish names like famous "Brzęczyszczykiewicz"

So basically "ng" and "rd" is pronounced really close to French. And you got the "R" pronounced like modern French, unlike other Scandinavians. So... Can I conclude here there's a French influence in pronunciation?

Mhh, I'd say the Danish R is closer to the German R. The french R is created by a vibration of the uvula (in phonetic transcription [ R ]), whereas the Danish and German R are created by friction on the uvula (in phonetic transcription [ ​ʁ ]), and they do sound different, too. It seems more likely to me due to geographical neighborhood that there was stronger influencing going on between Denmark and Germany (especiall northern German is phonetically close(r) to Danish) than between Denmark and France.

Actually, it's French that got influenced by Germanic languages and ended up with a German R (which is used in German, some accents of Dutch, and Danish). Also, the R at the end of syllables, like this -RD, would be pronounced like the British R where it's not fully realised, so it's not "gaarrrrrr" but "gå(o)" (you should check his video(s) about how to pronounce R to get a better understanding).

And also, French was the most influencing language in Europe from late antiquity to very recently. So it's more likely that French influenced Germanic languages, than the other way. So much French vocabulary went into both English and German. So even if it goes through Germany to get into Denmark, it's still French influence.
