Hello! I’m John Russell.
Let’s continue exploring scientific terms. Mastering these terms can help us discuss the earth sciences, social sciences, and more.
Today, we pay careful attention to the word “prediction.”
A prediction is a statement about a future event or outcome. Prediction is a central term to the scientific method.
Let’s start by noting that prediction ends with the letters -tion.
This is a common ending known as a suffix.
When we have nouns such as prediction that end in the suffix -tion, American have a general formula we follow to pronounce the word.
The general formula is this:
Stress the syllable that comes before the -tion ending.
That might sound a little complex, but the word “prediction” can help us.
When we practice saying words, it can be useful to clap on stressed syllables. This way, we know that we are saying certain parts of the word in the way that a native speaker would.
We will work together to develop this skill. I will clap on the stressed syllable. Note that the stressed syllable occurs before the -tion ending.

Now let’s listen to how a native English speaker might use “prediction” in a sentence.
Here is VOA Learning English’s Bryan Lynn using the term “prediction” in a Science and Technology report.

The ECMWF technology is called the Artificial Intelligence/Integrated Forecasting System (AIFS). The group describes the system as a “data-driven" forecasting model. It is designed to make many predictions quickly, including for extreme events involving powerful storms and heatwaves.

But while the predictions were right, destruction caused by the flooding could not be avoided.
That's all for today! Keep up the good work!
