Everyone! Believe me, if I had a Time Machine I’d go back and dial down the BG music in a heartbeat. It’s far too loud and aged about as well as picnic sushi. This was maybe the second or third video released on the channel, I don’t really know what I’m doing today, 5yrs later, but back then I was winging it. The pronunciation guidance stands, but it is not a lesson in Scots Gaelic either, it’s how to pronounce given names. Thank you for making this video a success despite the audio. If you can stomach more… Follow up Video: How to Pronounce Scotch Whisky #2 kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3OZimufg5WHnpY

5:30 Actually, when I visited Ledaig this summer they told me they emphasize the first syllable ("LED-chig"). Maybe it changes over the years, respectively whom you talk to? Also, a different whisky channel´s commenter suggests the "s" in Glenfarclas is silent: "Glenfarcluh". Can you confirm? 7:48 Also: "Good morning, we-are-a distillery?" ^^

Thank You very much for this very well done and friendly video!! For a long time this has been such a sensitive topic for me, a female bar tender in Germany, who has been mansplained about this so many times by wanna-be whiskey experts, and so often they don't believe me about the *actual* pronounciation that I learned as a professional, when I answer them. This video is always the one I recommend to watch. If they wanna be al experts on it, let them be told how it's done by a Scot.

I'm an American trucker , living in New Mexico (a state just due west of Texas) I love whiskey, drink mostly bourbon , but I really like Scotch too. I'm a descendant of the Ulster people (I have a Scottish Mc name. I shed a tear when I hear "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes and emboldened when I hear "Scotland the Brave" on the bagpipes. That stuff is still in me I guess 200 plus years later)These Ulster folks brought their whiskey making skills with them to Appalachia which is present day Tennessee, Kentucky, the Carolinas, West Virginia. That's where they invented bourbon in Kentucky. I really think my taste for whiskey is genetic. When I buy scotch I buy mostly Dewars or Johnny Walker. It's the most affordable, around $20 or so. I'll buy Glenlivet around Christmas time when the price drops to around $30 bucks. But anyway, thank you so much for this video. I've been butchering these Scotch names for years.
@ninjs29326 ай бұрын
What kind of scotch do you like? I prefer Speyside ones, Glenfiddich, Glenlevit etc.. I couldnt appreciate the taste of bourbon yet, can you suggest a smooth bourbon similar to a Speyside scotch. And thanks for sharing your story. cheers!!

I was in a pub out here in Victoria, BC and two chefs were sent out by their head chef to drink whisky (and whiskey) so they could learn the flavours and how to use them in the kitchen. The one beside me said, "Let's try that La Frog stuff." I corrected his pronunciation, helped them out with the little knowledge I had gathered on whisky, and ended up drinking on their employers tab as a thanks.

Seasons Greetings. Just surfing/typing and came across this blast. I have to point out that you're wrong, Roy. I DID get a dram when I ordered "tea bag", eventually - only after enduring a very weird Scottish "welcome" ceremony involving a lot of "dunking". I was a bit uncertain at first (I remember my first encounter with a haggis) but, "when in Glasgow"....What a friendly bunch, I thought - I'm not even going to bother the Polis (think I pronounced that right)😁 Preferred the lamb chops at Akbars, to be honest. @Aqvavitae7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and yes! 😅 I did. First I called the Gaelic college for their 'proper' Gaelic pronunciation, but that's not the whole story. Forgetting (for now) dialect, regional accents and evolution over time we need to understand that in most of these cases it's a brand, so it's the exact same as a person's given name. The true Gaelic way to pronounce it could be different from the brand owner's preference - so I called and asked them what that was. Even still, everyone has a different way of speaking so if, even after your best effort, you can't quite get it right, it's hardly critical. It should be fun. Thanks for the sub, and for taking the time to comment Reb, and of course for the Yiddish! Slàinte!

@peteymax2 жыл бұрын
@@cianoc8211 they’re pretty close though Bun (same as Gaeilge), na, h-Abhainn but with a v rather than a w. Lot’s of Gaelgoirí pronounce bh or mh as w rather than v and vice versa. Bun na h-Abhainn’s are right across Ireland.
