Today, we continue our exploration of common words, phrases, and questions in American English.
In recent lessons, we explored how to ask for directions. We also learned about two very important words - left and right.
These words often appear in standard kinds of phrases or expressions. A common structure is this:
You will see it on your ....
And a closely related version is this:
You will see it on the ....
When people give you directions, they might use these interchangeably. That is, there is no real difference in meaning.
So, when someone gives you directions, they might say this:
You will see it on your right.
Or
You will see it on the right.
Of course, we might also use left. So, we have:
You will see it on your left.
Or
You will see it on the left.
You should know that Americans often reduce or shorten words for faster, easier communication. The problem for English learners is that the statements can become harder to understand.
Let’s take an example:
You will see it on your right.
Becomes this:
Y’ll see it on your right.
Note that the pronoun “you” and the helping verb “will” get mixed together.
But do not worry about this issue too much. Pay attention to the end of the sentence - where the really important information is located: the words “left” and “right.”
That’s all for today! Keep up the good work.
