My cuttings are not very plum and healthy . I stuck them in the cactus compost with perlite. If I don’t water it , will the leaves all wilt and die? What should I do to promote roots fast?

I did stem cutting and I have tiny roots coming off the branches where leaves are at. I planted the stems in soil thinking it would dry out in the soil. I never watered it. After seeing this videoi am going to water slightly. But why are the top leaves showing roots?

Good luck with your cuttings, jade plants cuttings root fairly easily, so you should get a few plants, especially if using the leaf method as you'll be able to get a few leaves from each of the four cuttings.

Instead of twisting the leaves to pull them off, bending them up and down takes the edge of the base of the leaf off too, leaving nothing behind.

7:00 my guy, my friend, my dearest plant buddy, I don't think you understand just how badly Jade plants WANT to propagate. I have propagations from leaves that were absolutely MANGLED at the base. You don't need that little u-shape for it to work.

My jade plant is so bare. And don't even know where too start I'm surprised it's alive 😅 when I moved to my new apartment alot of them didn't survive. It's been a few years so I've been able to maintain what did. And I'm too chicken to repot the jade and cut it.. it was not happy for so long.. I'm finally feeling confident enough to start propagating. And repotting
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 2 ай бұрын
Good luck with your repotting and pruning, Jade plants often sprout lots of new leaves and shoots a few weeks after repotting, if they haven't been repotted for a long time, so hopefully by the end of summer they will be less bare.

I've had about 90% success with leaf cuttings by just laying them on the top of regular succulent/cactus mix. Sometimes a small plant or more will grow first and sometimes roots. When a fairly good root-ball has grown I then bury the roots and leave the leaf at a 30-45-degree angle. When a small plant grows first, I leave it until some roots ave formed then bury the roots. I have used this technique with other succulents and had about the same kind of success. Except for Kalanchoe Fedtschenkoi (Lavendar Scallops). These grow the pup plants from nodes on the leaves, but only if you lay the leaf flat on the soil until both a plant and roots grow. Then when you see a change in the donor leaf you can cut the leaf and plant each small plant separately.

I'm glad you found it useful, Jade plants are easy to grow from cuttings, although it can take a little while until you notice new growth. That time lapse at the end took two months.

Wish you showed more as to how you water the propagated leaves. Do you mist with a spray bottle water from below soil or gently water around the leaves?
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 9 ай бұрын
I gently water around the leaves, but generally I place them in slightly damp compost and only water again when it dries out, so after placing in the compost it doesn't get watered again for a few weeks.

@Gardeningat58N

Yes, if the old leaf is still green then keep it attached as it can still photosynthesize and will give energy to the young plant.

Thanks for the information, highly valuable. Question: With the massive cuttings you did off the mother plant, how long did you wait for those to dry out and callous over before you put them into soil? I am looking to do a massive cutting off my mother plant and wondering how long i need to wait to callous over? Thanks
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N Жыл бұрын
For my big cuttings I think I forgot about them for a while and it was a month or two, but usually a few days to a week is long enough, for larger cuttings it may be better to wait a week or two, just keep them somewhere cool and away from direct sunshine so they don't dry out too much.

How big should the pot be when you transplant the new leaf seedlings?
@eve-annetremblay1141
@eve-annetremblay1141 5 ай бұрын
Hi, when you transplant the little plants from the single leaf, can you plant multiple ones in the same pot? If yes, how many and how much space would you leave in between each? I’d like to get a pot with multiple little starters but not sure if that’s a good idea?
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 4 ай бұрын
Yes you can do, although you will either have to keep them small like a bonsai, separate them when they get too big or use a large pot. I would leave about 5 to 10cm (2 to 4 inches) between them, that should be enough space for a few years.
@ethanball4085
@ethanball4085 Жыл бұрын
Can you do this with smaller plants? Mine is only about 6 inches tall and doesn’t have very thick stems.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N Жыл бұрын
Yes, but you won't get as many cuttings and your original plant will be very small after cutting off some of the stem. Leaf cuttings are usually best if your mother plant is very small that way you can make new plants without removing much from the mother plant.

Quick question for you 58N, when you propagate from the leaf (which I have done amazing through pure chance) when do you get rid of the leaf from the mother plant or do you just let it dry away?
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 2 ай бұрын
Its best just to let the leaf die naturally as whilst its green it will continue to help support the new plant, also as it dies it will transfer all its nutrients over to the new plant.

@Gardeningat58N

Thanks, No I've only ever grown them from cuttings, even in the past when my plants flowered they never set seed. Growing from seed is a great way to find a new variety. Do the seedlings take a long time to size up? I imagine they must be very small seedlings.

Thanks for your awesome video! I got a large cutting from a very leggy jade plant - I've prepped the cuttings and have some leaves I want to try and propagate - but I'm wondering whether I can propagate from a stem cutting that doesn't have any leaves on it? I've got a tonne of leafless stem left and I'm hoping I can make use of it.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 2 жыл бұрын
Stem cuttings without leaves are less likely to root and grow, but it's still possible. It depends on how weak the plant was, if it was a healthy plant it will have a lot of sugars stored in it's stems and the stems will have the energy to grow roots and new leaves. However if the parent plant was weak there might not be enough sugars stored in the stems to successfully root, it's certainly worth a try though.

@@Gardeningat58N thank you! Your videos are extremely educational. I got a cutting of quite a large branch and have had it lying around the house for probably a month. I made cuttings as per your intructions at the start of the week so I'll plant them over the weekend. During the time it's been sitting around it's been sending out lots of tiny roots, and quite a lot of tiny leaves have grown. The plant was so leggy though there are quite long sections without any leaves. Guess I'll chop them up and give it a crack! I'm assuming you've gotta make sure they're pointing the right way when you plant them? XD
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, ideally they should be the right way round which may be difficult to figure out. If you can't tell you can always burry them just below the surface on their side. This usually causes them to shoot all along the stem and creates more plants, although they are slightly less likely to root.

I tried this and the leaves rotted and died. I think I buried it too deep. I cut off the dead part does it still have a chance of rooting?
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like it was either buried too deep, the compost isn't free draining enough or the compost was kept too wet. With a leaf cutting if it starts to rot there is normally no way of saving it, however if its a stem cutting you can cut off the rotting part and replant it and it should root if the compost is not too wet.

Yes at this time of year it should be ok to cut it back, as long as its in good health and has enough light it should respond well to the prune by branching lower down. I have a video all about such a technique called: How To Prune And Straighten A Jade Plant.

Thank you, awesome video! 👍🏽👌🏼 My beloved 10 year old Jade which looked really healthy just fell apart thjs week in literally two days!! I couldn't see any sign of rot or drying out or soft leaves or white spots! I repotted it a few months ago n succulent compost and it's been growing really well, yet this happened! The only possible difference is that the room is cooler and there is slightly less direct sunlight but it is near a large window though. And it had been doing well for months. Could it be temperature? I looked at the roots and they look fine. What is left of the plant I have repotted but it looks like a bare tree!! I have cuttings from it too but will they be healthy having fallen off a presumably troubled plant?! I really want to save my original Jade! Thanks so much in advance!

it's so easy to do cuttings of jade plant you don't even have to remove any of the leaves.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they are probably one of the easiest cuttings to take, the fact that the leaves store water means that you can keep a lot of leaves on the cuttings and they also almost never dry out before the roots are established making them much more successful than most other plant cuttings.
