Do you think that those cuttings will be ok without soil for few days? Hi! I live in Canada (Vancouver area) and after about a month of searching I was finally able to find a string of pearls plant that wasn't a ridiculous price. I have always struggled with my succulents and unfortunately my string of pearls is looking worse for wear. The strings and pearls have been drying out/shrivelling up and die.. I have also been watering only when the soil is completely dry/whenever the pearls look a bit shrivelled so I'm not sure why this is happening. I'm hell bent on keeping this plant alive so any extra advice would be lovely xx thank you!

Hi...i live on Vancouver Island...love my string of pearls....i have only a small pot of them..working on propagating them...i check out all my plants on World of Succulents...great advice...i have actual single peas growing right in my pot.....i fold over and pin my strings, making sure that the a roots along the string, has contact with the soil, i use paper clips, cut in half, to pin them in place...make sure they are plastic coated(bright colors, so you can remove them later, once rooted well, then you can cut this loop to make an individual string. I know this may sound strange, if you want, contact me on FB and i can send you a photo of my plant lol...and do check out World of Succulents, im also on a succulents group vancouver area, great people for lots of great succulent advice....Catherine Saulnier

Hi, I am subscribed to your channel, because I collect cactus and succulents for my rock garden. I noticed in this video that you have a Crassula perfoliata "propella plant" in the background. Can you pleeease give me advise on how to care and water mine... I am on my 4th plant now, the last two still look healthy, but I am scared to water it , I killed my first one with water, and once the bottom leaves do not like water on it... How do you care for yours? How often do you water it? I see very little information online for this plant and I need help before its too late... My leaves are feeling a little limp, my 2nd crassula, the leaves are almost paper thin. I feel like it has used all of the nutrients in the leaves already, which is why it's super thin...
@desertplantsofavalon8 жыл бұрын
+Deadria Hamilton Hi Deadria :-) thanks so much for watching :-) yes the Propeller plant can be a difficult one when it comes to watering because they can be prone to rot because of the very bottom leaves resting on the top of the soil, and I water mine from the bottom of the saucer that the pot is in, and let the plant take up the water from the saucer, it takes a lot longer but its worth it, and I re fill the saucer over a few hours until the top surface of the soil in the pot feels damp. I also prefer to use rainwater when possible too. What I do with mine is I keep it absolutely dry from October until April, my plant does shrivel a lot during that time and the leaves go thin, but when I start to water it again from April, it fattens up again :-) I give my plant a thorough water from the saucer until the soil is thoroughly damp, and then I let the soil totally dry out before watering it again sometimes leaving it for a few weeks in between waterings :-) I use a very sandy compost mix of half soil based compost and half horticultural sand for good drainage as this helps the roots and stops the chances of them rotting :-) Hope this helps and good luck with growing your Propeller plant, and sending you an abundance of love and happy growing from Ireland for a wonderful Friday ahead XXXXX
@cocogoddess738 жыл бұрын
First, let me say, thank you for responding so quickly... I learn/experiment on new ideas with my plants from watching your videos. I think you should do a video on this succulent, with the hashtag, #propellerplant along with its proper name. There are not enough thorough informative videos on its care. I live in the Turks & Caicos, so I have to substitute if I cannot find exactly what I need. I will ask the nursery store here to bring in the horticultural sand for me to use. The mixture I used is 50% wood chips, spaghnum peet moss and premium garden soil. I might have some build sand, which is like sand to small gravel size. Where do you place your plant? We get mostly temperatures of 70s 80s to 90s and summer all year round. My first plant, which died from lack of knowledge :-( r.i.p. I thought it being inside was good, but I made the mistake of peeling off one of the bottom leaves to propagate it, and it was downhill from there fast, along with the watering. My plant I have now, i keep outside, among the other plants in a shaded area, I bring it inside if we have intense rain to avoid water getting on the leaves. How often do you water your plant throughout the year? Are you saying that you DO NOT water your plant from Oct to April at all? Do you fertilize?
@desertplantsofavalon8 жыл бұрын
Deadria Hamilton Hi Deadria :-) Thats a very good idea about a video for the propeller plant as there is so little online for the care of this wonderful plant :-) and I will definitely make video on its care in the coming weeks :-) You are so lucky living in Turks and Caicos with those gorgeous temperatures :-) here in Ireland we think we are having a heatwave if we get anything over 50 Fahrenheit haha! I keep my plant in a south facing window in the office and it gets mostly all day sunshine ( when we get it here LOL! ) Yes I don't water this plant at all from October until April and I keep it cool as its quite cold on the windowsill and the temperature drops very low of a night in the Winter in the office, but I protect it from frosts, I use a cactus and succulent fertilizer with every 4th watering I give this plant from April until early September :-) because your climate is lovely and warm, you may be best to still water your plant during the Winter to prevent the roots from drying up, and letting the soil in the pot dry out in between waterings :-) your soil mix sounds great but I would avoid using buliders sand as it is different to the Horticultural sand, but if you can't get hold of any horticultural sand then you could maybe add some perlite if possible to the mix for extra aeration if you can hold of some :-) Hope this helps, and sending you an abundance of love and heaps of happy growing from right across the emerald Isle to Turks and Caicos for a FANTASTIC weekend ahead XXXXX

Thank you so much for the help. I will follow your advice. And if I get in a bind I will send you a message... So, my understanding from you is, to continue to water as you prescribed, since i never winter. The succulent fertilizer is a jelly texture. Do I put it in the water when watering?

What do you do with the pearls that you pick off the stem. Plant them also??? Thanks in advance . Just got a hanging basket and started another pot that one of the strings came off and dos it the same way you did by laying it on top of soil. What about the pearls you took off. What do you do with them please?? 🌿🌱🌴🍃🌺

Hi there :-) thanks so much for watching :-) yes you can also put the pearls on top of the soil to to root but I usually put them into the composter because they can be very fiddly to try to root and i haven't had that much success with rooting the pearls individually but /i do know of others that have had success with rooting the pearls also :-) thanks so much for your fantastic comment and sending you an abundance of love and heaps of happiness from right across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX

Hi there, it can take a couple of months or more for these cuttings to take root especially during the late Winter or very early spring, keep the cuttings in a bright and warm position and the very top of the soil lightly moist to encourage rooting, good luck with your cuttings and thanks so much for watching XXXX

very informative Lyn 👍💖 is this the same with donkey or burrow's tail??? like when you said dobt need to wait for callus, is it the same with burrow's tail?? i would like to try this someday...😘xoxo from indonesia to ireland
@desertplantsofavalon8 жыл бұрын
+Indra Yudha Kusuma Thanks so much Indra for your wonderful comment :-) with Burros tail because the diameter of the stems is thicker, I would still wait a day or two to let the cut part callus over just to be on the safe side, sometimes with my other sedum type plants that are only very thin and even Aeoniums I often don't let them callus over and I pot them as soon as I cut them and they seem to have no problems with rot, but I think to be on the safe side you would be better to leave them callus first :-) thanks so much for watching Indra and sending you heaps of love and tons of happiness from Ireland to Indonesia and have a FANTASTIC afternoon XXXXXX
