Best level of quirk and plant passion. Subscribed. 😂 I've started doing a biology degree, aiming to specialise in plant sciences here at the University of Dundee, but I had no plants in my flat. I got 4 random plants that I was told were easy to take care of so I could start my plant family. One of them was the Schefflera Arboricola, but the leaves started to yellow and drop. I've gone from clueless to thinking about propagation now. 🤣😁 Thank you! ^_^

I rescued my umbrella plant from a skip. Someone had thrown it out, I guess because it wasn't looking to healthy. I repoted it, pruned it back and just stuck the cuttings back into the soil. I didn't really know what I was doing. Lol. Having said that, all the cutting grew despite a lack of attention on my part. That was years ago and I now have some really nice specimens. As long as you don't over water it, this plant is pretty indestructible. I keep mine in darker areas of my house where most other plants struggle to survive. I let the soil really dry out before watering. If you see the leaves suddenly drouping, water it immediately, but once again be careful not to let it sit in saturated soil.

The thing with plastic bag worked for me, after 3 weeks it is rooting and i can see white bulgy spots on the stems that are inside of water. It was standing by the window where it gets around 2 h of direct sunlight and around 3 h of indirect brightness. Thank you ! (Also I live in a cold climate and my big schefflera is doing fine inside with occasional evening cold air coming from outside )

Perfect! Clear, utterly bonkers, right up my street. NOTE:- the plastic used in carrier bags causes a problem at recycling centres because it is the wrong kind of plastic for rubbish collection (garbage). Makes no sense to me either, but use 'bin' bags in bins. Different plastic which they can collect and reuse/recycle. If you have too many shopping bags, ( I have them all over, pockets, car, glovebox, rolled up and secured with a hair tie, and use them till they are NFG) in the uk there is at the bigger stores usually a collection point for them. Then they can be processed correctly. Good job on the video! cheers!

Wow I’ve never propagated like that before you’ve taught me something new. Much easier way I will say is what you just showed me because the way I did it several years ago I thought I was gonna pull my hair out I almost did and since then the tree has quadrupled in size and I’ve got to clean it up but I think I’m gonna do your way better. I had cut it just from the sides and had about 100 150 different leaves all over the place and I route of them just fine no problem I think I lost one out of the bunch but I will put it straight into water within four or five days most all of them had route some took about seven days but that’s how I sell my plants and it’s quick and easy as long as they have the right amount of sun which they do they were pretty much route anytime you just throw them in water has to be filtered though it’s better to be filter I should say they’re pretty hearty. Thanks for showing me this though

Could you do an update video? I just noticed that my Umbrella Plant has TONS of nodes at the very bottom of the stem, my umbrella plant is very very young when I bought them from the store and I’ve always wanted to propagate them. I realized they were nodes on the stem AFTER I had propagated a ton of pothos! My umbrella plants grows so much since it’s been in direct sunlight and it grows roots nonstop, one of my friends told me that you can cut the new roots and propagate them that way but I’m not too sure if it’s true and if it works. But I’d like to see how your original Umbrella Plant is growing from where it was cut and how your new propagated plant is doing!

Wondering if you might know! I successfully rooted two Schefflera leaf stems in water (it took months). I had nothing to lose since they broke off when my plant blew over. Once the roots were about 3"-4" long, I planted them in soil. It is now a year later and they look the same as when I planted them. No growth, no change whatsoever. Any idea what's going on (rather, what's not going on) with this? :D
@griesspunch2 жыл бұрын
There needs to be a node on the cutting. Propagating just the leaf stems without additional nodes (where new growth can push through) will result in a leaf being just a leaf forever.

@Macksimize1004 жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh I LOVE the variegated Schefflera, your boyfriend is a smart man 😂 - So those offshoots might be stemmed from the mother plant, hard to say without looking at it, but the only way to know is to take the plant out of the soil and check - you can check without harming the plant just be very gentle with the root ball as you do it! You can easily separate the babies if they have their own root system separate from the mother stem if that makes sense, then gently cut them off and pot them up in their own house/pot

Will that leaf falling off encourage the plant to branch? I want it to branch out I don't just want one large set of leaves. I know she got it as a cutting so it might eventually start up but I'm brand new to this plant!

How long should the root be before I plant it? Thanks :)

I would wait until one of the roots is about an inch long if you can :)

Hi! I have a question and i hope you answer me :D So I'm wondering if you've ever just removed a single lead, node and all and tried that way? I did, It took a very long time for it to root. It's been 2 years and its just a leaf with roots. it has never grown any more than that. My single leaf is doing fine! Do you know if there's anything I can do to make it grow into a tree?

i have a little problem with my umbrella tree, she has some leaves with short stems on top and a little second brach on the bottom with amazing growth, very big healthy leaves in a short time, how do i get her to grow from the top as well ??

Well.... if this works I will be very much surprised and delighted. I have tried all those methods and nothing worked. In my research I found that the only way to propagate a schefflera is to air root. Please keep us updated.

I know it’s frustrating when they don’t work! My friends have tried these and it worked for them?! I think it just depends on the plant, I was actually thinking of making a separate vid on how to propagate by air layering - will keep you guys posted! 😊

oh gosh there's nothing more powerful than a large umbrella tree, it'll probably still be there long after we die 😂 oh and YESSS so glad you have a rock mug too 😎💃
