How To Properly Cut A Cigar:
Most people are familiar with plastic cigar cutters that are purchased for a few dollars or given for free at a cigar lounge. Whilst they're functional, they're quite flimsy and may be quite dull, which can crush rather than cut cigars.
[02:22] Straight Guillotine Cut:
The most popular cut is the straight guillotine. However, before we explore this further, it's important to know where to cut your cigar.
You should always aim for just above the cap along the shoulder of the cigar's head. Any lower and this may cause the cigar to unravel. Therefore, it's important to leave a bit of flag leaf around the cigar's circumference.
However, even though you should take care to cut the cigar, don't be too hesitant either as being too slow could crush the cigar. So you should cut with a decisive snip.
What we love about using the scissors over typical cigar cutters is that it provides a greater level of visual control so your cuts can be more precise.
[05:20] V-Cutters:
V-cutters are sometimes the subject of controversy as some people dislike them whilst others swear by them.
Firstly, cheaper V-cutters can become blunt quite quickly so they can actually crush rather than cut. However, a quality cigar cutter works well and cuts out a wedge from your cigar's head.
Some say that this provides a quality draw and prevent bits of tobacco falling into your mouth. Others also praise the way that the head collects tar rather than it being inhaled for a cleaner smoke.
However, there are some that argue that the accumulation of tar can make the smoke quite bitter.
V-cutters are considered to be easy as there is a guard, which prevents you cutting too low down the wrapper.
If you're feeling brave or feel the draw it too tight, you can cut another wedge sideways for an x-cut!
[7:20] Punch Cuts:
Another convenient cutting method is by using a punch. This creates a small hole in the head without much effort.
It's quite handy for large cigars as they're not constrained by ring gauge. Some even come with different sizes so you can use them according to your cigar's size.
Furthermore, they can be fixed to a key chain, which means that they're a very portable option for carrying with you at all times.
Like v-cuts, you also have a build-up of tar, which is very much a question of personal preference.
[09:27] Cutting Figurados & Odd-Shaped Cigars
Cutting torpedoes and perfectos can be intimidating but it's quite easy with a little practice.
Straight cuts are the best type of way to cut a figurado. You can either cut them straight or at an angle depending on the draw that you want.
Charles-Philippe likes cutting his figurados at an angle for more draw whilst Paul Anthony prefers a perpendicular cut.
With a longer cap, you have greater flexibility for customising your cut's draw. You can do a high cut then work your way down until you're happy.
[10:53] DIY Cutting Methods:
Here we discuss methods for cutting a cigar without a cutter such as using your teeth, a matchstick, a pocket knife or even a straight razor or blade.
