I would really like to see a car wheel moddeling tutorial :)
@josephbrandenburg43736 жыл бұрын
16:15 You really should create a grid of quads on top. That will make it easier to subdivide cleanly. You could also model surface tension that way, with soft select. It's better for animation and rigging, won't have shading artifacts either. Triangle fans create awful normals in the corner, they're only OK when you're using flat shading.

why not use the nurbs curve tool? it would significantly reduce production time which equals less money for that production and a happy boss. It takes about 5 minutes and with renderman or mental ray u could just texture and render right in maya
@MHTutorials3D7 жыл бұрын
You are right and I agree. I have used that technique in earlier videos but I have been asked to show this method
@alisamcclain96037 жыл бұрын
ok cool lol sorry, i didn't mean any disrespect I was just curious because you have mentioned efficiency in your other videos so this one confused me. I love your tutorials though-is it possible for you to cover some tips about your workflow when modeling more realistic cars and vehicles in general?

I liked this low-poly approach, thanks! Any thoughts on using curves to create a profile and then revolving? This method seems efficient, and of course tutorials of that method are ubiquitous on KZbin...perhaps you were eluding to this in your opening statements? Just curious, thanks :)
@MajorKreissack888 жыл бұрын
exactly my thoughts. As soon as he started I was wondering why he didnt just make a CV curve and do a 360 revolution. and just adjust the U and V number of edge loops for the desired polycount.

@dannyhengel76458 жыл бұрын
Mike Hermes naaah... Hermes knows best. You've gotten me through more than a few overnighters doing hard surface modeling. I do have a question though; for my glass I don't know why-- but when I go to cleanup every single face looks like it has a line running diagonally from corner to corner indicating n-gons.... but I followed you to the T on this one. I wonder what caused that to happen? I still rendered it fine with miaX using the parameters for glass.... hmm

This is a great tutorial, thanks, but when I follow the same steps making my bottle, then export the .obj into Keyshot, I have to scale the 'liquid' away from the wall of the bottle to be able to see it, any ideas oh Guru of the Glass? :) (I've tried using an offset as well in the face duplication stage, negative and positive values just to test, nothing works properly so far, bits stick out)

Wouldn't it be quicker to use NURBS to model the glass? Is there a flaw with NURBS, or is it just a personal preference? (I am not very experienced with this, so it's very easy to get confused!)
@MHTutorials3D8 жыл бұрын
If you need a glass as a prop on a shelf that's fine. I have used this technique in earlier tutorials. However, if you need a glass that is close up I would recommend doing it this way
@NekoSamaIru8 жыл бұрын
If we convert the NURBS glass to polygon, would there be any difference? I'm not against this method. I am just really curious.
@MHTutorials3D8 жыл бұрын
It's not the method but the end result. Even when converted to polygons the model would be different

Hi Mike, I'm new and trying to follow along with this video. I get to the 4 min mark in the video and as I'm trying to extrude my way up the glass i keep getting a small window that blocks my view and its irritating. This window shows "Thickness, Local Z, Offset, Divisions, and Keep Faces together". How do I disable that from popping up in my work space?

"properly" - wine glasses don't have big valley at the bottom like that just a slight indent. You modeled around a decoration bubble or a refraction effect. - modelling a wineglass from a cylinder is terrible, that's why you got a circle of bulge at middle and circle dent at the top of the upper part, and the top curving in, which looks silly. Juts becase all the random youtubers always try to create everything from extruding a primitive's vertices, doesn't mean it's ok, or should be copied 1000 times more. - glass at the top part is way too thick, once again from trying to crudely adapt a cylinder into glass - bezier curve + revolve is the solution - the refraction looks awful on the final render, it's completely wrong because you got touching faces, that's why the wine fades to almost white, and it seems so swallow the glass sides. - wine has surface tension, it climbs up on the glass creates a very distinctive line of refraction, completely missing. This one of the thing that makes these crude models so amateurish + glass being thick like it's a coffe mug.
@TheRumpusView4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree, the method was ridiculous, how can he have missed the revolve curve option? And major features such as meniscus are missing.
