HOW TO PROPERLY Plant Tomatoes Sideways! 🍅 IS IT WORTH IT? WATCH THIS. | Gardening in Canada.
In this video we take the popular nearly viral idea of planting tomatoes 🍅 on their side and put it to the test. The idea is if you plant the tomato sideways you’ll end up with bigger better tomato. And while I don’t disagree with this method I do think it takes a lot of room and also puts stress of the stem on the plant. So in this video we go over the science of the sideways tomato method, how to properly plant tomatoes to get the same result. Happy planting and remember planting tomatoes sideways is okay but there are always better methods!

Hope you enjoyed! Have you tried the sideways planting style? Did it work for you? And did you find It took up space in the garden or that you were putting an unneeded amount of stress on the stem. I think the theory of sideways stems (haha) from the idea that the ability to control moisture is easier in the upper portions of the profile due to natural gas exchange and exposure to the atmosphere. This allows for evapotranspiration which is a normal process in soil/plant systems. But within raised beds and or containers this evapotranspiration happens at all levels based on the design and it being a closed system. Thoughts?

I did and will again. I was short on the plant money and laying on their side yielded 5 plants for each one I bought. I'm in Missouri and they were also very hardy plants by the end result.

We planted a tomato sideways this year but only because it seemed best for this particular plant. We’ve had a lot of volunteer tomatoes pop up from last year’s yellow pears & we found one growing out the drain hole in a tote filled with dirt & yard waste. We freed him from the tote and, after examining his condition, found there were many healthy suckers growing from the main stem, which had grown sideways. Our only other option was to separate & propagate them all, so we trimmed off the bottom suckers & buried the main stem with the suckers pointing upward, leaving the main crown at the end. It plus the four suckers have grown up beautifully & are pumping out the biggest yellow pears we’ve ever seen. We’ve kept them all pruned as if they were five, single stem plants. You’d never know any different.

I've been doing this for years. I started doing it because I had cheap cages that's collapsed, the plant fell over and I left it. I had the most tomatoes I ever had. The only con is that you need space. My 4 plants ended up taking up a 8' x 15' bed.

I don’t plant sideways because it’s too much stress on the stem. I plant for depth instead.

I thought this was the only way to plant any plant , as deep as possible for more support & so your roots are better anchored Into the soil ... I've been planting all my plants like this since my very first 🪴plants or flowers 🌼🌸 ! I thought this was how everyone did it ...

Yea! Seriously try it, it’s my grandmas trick she has used for decades it’s honestly the best option. I’ve used cedar shingles before as well, but the bucket idea is awesome.

I did this with my squash without knowing any better 😅 Then I heard it could make the stem rot, but I didn't want to transplant then again, so I dug around the plant just to free the stem. I guess the extra soil depth remaining around it will just serve the same purpose as mulch? Oh well!

Is it ok to plant them deep like this for cannabis plants? I'm guessing tomatoe/cannabis stems act very similar. Some seedlings I got are a little leggy, and I think top dressing them with an inch more of soil is probably good idea.

Absolutely no reason why you can’t plant them deep. Actually you will end up with better water capture.

Sorry last question! I see you have purchased cow manure bags.. I heard something about how a particular herbicide can leech into manure - even commercially sold bags - and shrivel plants..... I'm sure you've encountered the rumour before, but is there any truth to that risk that we might buy contaminated manure by accident?

I mentioned it quickly but the issue is that it’s a lot of unnecessary stress of the stem and the better method would be dig it in deep.
