I think I finally understand what rhythm change means, you've been very helpful.

I’ve been playing guitar for 50 years, rock, blues, country, but only recently got into learning jazz. When I sat down to learn the daunting RHYTHM CHANGES, I realized I had been playing it for 50 years already. Its in everything from the Allman Bros to Jed Clampett, swing, blues, the Flintstones…

It looks a lot more complicated on paper than it is really. That's the case for many jazz charts when you break them down. Hope your jazz journey is going well.

Shout out to Slim Gaillard for playing dozens (hundreds?) of rhythm changes tunes dating to the 1930s.

No G7 in bar 1 innit. EDIT: a bit of context; haven’t watched the whole video yet so it’s possible/likely you bring this up but this was a Barry Harris talking point; Parker never played G7 in bar 1 and reserved the G7 for bar 3 (if it’s played at all) instead just staying on the Bb6/Gm7 for the first bar. I infinitely prefer RC this way but it’s almost never taught like this. Barry also had a version of a bop Blues that I’ve never seen elsewhere but sounds fantastic.

Hey Scrappy. Check out the whole video, if you have time. The whole G7 in bar 1 was where DC was making a point about the "music school" way of playing the tune. He then goes into all the variations, including the I-V-I-V movement that I personally love :) Congrats again on the new album, btw :)

Maybe a question for you . This is great and giant steps is next on my viewing list . But . I’m looking for a guitar that can bridge this and be overdriven with some fuzz .. I’ve noticed the trini lopez but maybe something less .. btw I have purchased from soundslice and thank you ! I would love to see Sunny transcribed Ala birelli and Jocho! Great video!

What to play is up to debate? Yes, a master debate, if you will...sorry, genetic condition prevents me from emotionally maturing beyond eighth grade!
