Very good video that shows some very practical Aikido. I wish more schools taught like this. Thank you for sharing this video.

15 years ago, our Sensei moved from the more commonly taught Aikikai style, to the Nishio Budo style. The latter is just another world. I thank our Sensei everyday for this change. Thank you for this nice compilation of Nishio's Sensei explanation of Atemi. It summarises very well why Atemi is so important in Aikido. Such videos may help people who don't know about Aikido changing their opinion on Aikido. Well done.

Lifetime martial artist from age 12. Past retirement now, still studying. Approach sort of JKD & traditional Japanese arts, aikido with aikijitsu and other similar material added. But core is bold aikijitsu/aikido with atemi thrown in. This is a rare gem of a video. Thank you. fof your channel.

I loved Nishio sensei perspective on the practical techniques, Saito sensei also focuses on atemi on most of the techniques, the two were jewels in the Aikido world

Yeah to have that kind of speed and accuracy at his age? He was a fighter for sure.

Once shize, kokyu kami and ma ai are addressed the attemi of the irimi should naturally occur regardless of techniques as techniques are below this level of elemental practice. However, with respect, with kotegaeshi I would never turn my back on uke. Rather, revert to the origins of kotegaeshi, two locked katana and attack directly at uke cutting him to the floor and away from me. The assumption that uke cannot strike you is dangerous. It is better not to be near ukes front where he can strike. Better not to stand on the tracks when a train is coming. In gyaku hanmi karate dori, where it is stated you cannot kick, by turning the hip uke could execute mawashi geri. Leading to a fight scenario. All comments with greatest respect and from a fellow akidokas observations.

I trained with similar understanding within Aikikai.. I just wonder why he is wearing female keiko-gi with the chest tie

Not for sure who " our way" is but was taught very similar way. Good stuff. What association is this?

This is Shoji Nishio Sensei. Though still under the Akikai Hombu organization most people refer to it as Nishio Ryu.

I have not seen any Japanese grandmaster in the ring...they all do katas, forms, demos and punch stones and bricks with bare hands...anything but fight.

@@CorporaMedicina The ring is sport, not real fight. Wrestling, arm-bar, kicking are very effective in the ring but would be pretty much useless against a knife. Not saying fighter in the ring are bad fighters. They train hard and strong. They are good fighters. But saying fighting in the ring = fighting in real life is deeply mistaken.
