It's kind of like "th" in English, as the person above has pointed out, one of those unfamiliar sounds we substitute with more familiar sounds at first ("d", "f", "z" instead of "th" in English) when learning a new language, that we then learn to articulate as we come to master a language.

You're genius, I've been learning Russian for a year now and constantly struggling with this. No teacher I've had could explain it as well as you. This might help: russian consonants are velarized before the ы so what this means is basically that your tounge is bunched back like you would pronounce the letter w (like in the word "we") so when your tounge is in that same position after velarized consonant, the sound ы comes extremely naturally

I just noticed something. I've been learning Russian through English, because that's where most resources are, but I think the Russian ,,ы'' sounds very similar to the Portuguese "e", which is my native language. That makes it so much easier. At least, the tongue positioning is very similar.

Thanks for the articulatory phonetics! I had been saying it like the "u" (as in "tu") in French or the "ö" (as in "öl") in German, but that's clearly too rounded.

As a professional teacher, I can recommend the following - say the English [u:] (like in mood, room) and while saying it smile. It is important; start with pronouncing the long u: sound and then smile while making the sound. This way your lips, tongue, and jaw get in the right position and you pronounce a perfect ы sound. Practice it as many times as needed, the more often the better. Your articulatory system will be able to remember what to do next time you need to say ы in Russian.
