Thanks, your video gave me good ideas as my palm tree has become to big to come inside this winter. I’ve been cutting my banana tree down every year and using it’s leaves as a winter protection along with a plastic cover and it grows a foot a week from Spring to Fall in New York

I am using the survival safety blankets made by NASA and a one of those floor shop lights that puts out a lot of heat. The blanket is reflective and it will trap the heat inside from the light. I will hang a temperature sensor inside to keep an eye on things. I have used this method before to keep a blueberry plant that flowered early from losing it's flower blossoms.

Yes! I use the mylar blankets on the North wall of my greenhouse and indoor shelving with LED grow lights. It's good stuff. 🤙🌴

I got a sabal palm that I think is still alive after the freeze back in March I had cut off all the palms they were all brown except for like 2 or 3 and they grew little longer but the new palms just coming out the middle are dead but I still have 1 green palm which i had cut down to about just 2 ft long how do I know if it's still alive

All palm trees grow from the center stem. Give your center stem a tug. If it pulls out, it's done.

For my bananas, I use a slightly different method. I use PVC pipes, end caps, plastic fencing, straw, plastic tarps, and rope. After the first hard frost, I cut the leaves off and saw my plants down to around 4 feet. I place the leaves on the ground around the plants. This helps act as a barrier between the damp ground and staw. I pound 4 to 5 PVC pipes into the ground around the clump and place the end caps on them. This helps keep the tarp from tearing on the PVC pipes. I wrap the fencing around the PVC pipes then tie (I use the rope from the hay bales) the bottom 2 feet of the fencing then fold down the top portion of the fencing. Begin filling the cage with straw. Folding up and tying the fencing as I fill up the cage. Once the cage is filled, I throw the tarp over the cage. I use a tarp that is large enough to cover the cage and some of the ground around the cage. I wrap the the cage in rope starting at the bottom to keep the tarp in place. I use the trunks and any leaves left over to cover and keep in place the portion of tarp that is on the ground The only thing I have to buy each year is the straw and I can let my clumps get as big as I want. I have clumps that are 6 feet wide with trees that get 14 to 15 feet tall.

I just got a mexican fan palm it is in a 3.5 gallon pot from a nursery in Las cruces NM. I live in albuquerque nm where is gets slightly colder in the winters with occasional snow, I want to protect my palm throughout the winter without having a high electric bill would you know of any other methods, thank you
@Tiki713 жыл бұрын
The Christmas lights aren't that expensive. With the Thermocube they only come on when it gets so cold and then turn off when it warms up. Usually in the overnight and morning when electric rates are low anyway. It's the only thing I know to do to zone push palms that don't normal live somewhere.

Plumeria don't like going below 50. In taking them into the greenhouse later this fall 😉🤙

I did all of this, protection, wire cages/ foam sheets in wood, light bulbs, worked rather well for young palms for years, I was crazy about cold hardy palms. But after awhile, stopped it. If your palm cannot survive long term to adult size in your zone, which you usually can't protect due to size, what's the use. I got rid of my Med's, washingtonians, butia, and others. Kept with windmills, minors, needle palms. They likely to survive long term, with no protection. Still had to use leaf blower to remove snow on 20 foot windmills and others. My 12 foot windmills at the time, were defoliated twice, but came back, Young windmills, many times center spear pulled, but palm came back. Wrapping a palm usually wont do much good for protection, unless heat is added. Often saw teens each winter in charlotte nc, warmest winter was a low of 18. But few winters of temps below 10f. Usually if had low in the teens, and high temps in the mid 20's during the day and teens the next night, it defoliated my windmills, but Minors and needles did fine. Grew hardy palms for 25 years in charlotte, had my place featured in the observer newspaper. I dealt with ice, snow, wind, freezing rain in those 25 years, From seed grown windmills, minors. I saw it all.

We have a professional winterization of palm tree landscapers who will come and do adult trees here in Toronto. I am surprised you didn't have those specialists in your area. Too bad you had to get rid of the Butia and Washingtonias because of size.

Has anybody done any testing to see if this actually works (perhaps with temperature comparison of inside vs. outside)? Just checking since I lost 6 pygmy palms this past winter, replaced them all, and don't want to spend thousands on new ones again..and I like solid facts. I've already purchased a good fertilizer and they are on a 6 week schedule, will purchase a concentrate that helps protect them when it gets cold, so I'm just wondering while going all out this time. LOL. Great video btw, Thank you!

You should try it with Orinoco bananas. They are the easiest and fairly hardy. It would take 2-3 seasons for bananas, though.

My Zebrinas put on bananas in the second season. They were in a big pot in the greenhouse over the winter though. They were hitting the ceiling by March. lol

What are you or how will you wrap the Windmills when they are about 20 foot tall in the winter time?
@Tiki713 жыл бұрын
They will grow about 1 & a 1/2 feet per year. Once in the ground and established, they wont need protection in zone 7b. This was a once in a lifetime arctic blast, but these will have a great hardiness.

@@Tiki71 I’m in Grand Rapids, MI and we’re a 5/6 and I’ve contemplated this windmill palm idea here. Take it indoors for a few years then try to wrap it etc in the winter. Soon. Good luck Tiki!
@Tiki713 жыл бұрын
Just add tarp wraps. There's a guy in PA that does a similar set up, but double wraps with tarps and puts lots of C9 lights inside with a remote thermometer in each barrel. 🤙🌴

Do you think it would be possible to just wrap lights around and put a few layers of burlap directly over the tree?
@Tiki712 жыл бұрын
Direct contact can lead to mildew & rot, when it gets moisture trapped. I try to avoid direct contact like that.

@@Tiki71 Thanks for the reply! Another question if you don't mind. I want to get a Mexican fan palm but I know they grow pretty fast. what do you do when the palm tree ends up getting too big the be put in a box or a cage? I live in Ohio by the way so it's zone 6a over here.
@Tiki712 жыл бұрын
Every two years I buy a couple of 3 gallon ones off Amazon and plant them. When the big ones get too big to protect & a freeze gets it, I'll top it with the chainsaw and carve them in to tiki's. 🤙🗿
@Salmiyaguy13 жыл бұрын
This looks simpler. Maybe I can use a garbage can lid instead of the swimming pool. 🤔
