The 3rd generation Range Rover L322 is renowned for suffering with the rear wheel arches and sill areas rusting and rotting away. Here I demonstrate a simple modification to help prevent this from happening using parts designed for the Freelander 2.

Parts used:
2x LR001623 Freelander 2 wheel arch edge protectors www.lrdirect.c...
Hammerite Direct to Rust paint amzn.to/2Vl4epT
Hammerite Waxoyl 5L amzn.to/3csSw25 or spray can amzn.to/2ypKEzT
Petroleum Jelly amzn.to/3bqlq32
Part code for clips that hold the plastic sill covers in place LR018389 & ANR2224 you will need around 8 of each for each side of the car if you break them during removal.

NO NO NO NO, as a long term vehicle restorer less is more just regular wax oiling is the only way to manage double skins DO NO NOT put anything on top that will hold the moisture in, you only have to look at the wheel arches on SZ Rolls-Royce models which have had arch protectors, they retain moisture and never dry out causing the arches to rot.

That plastic arch protector just traps dirt behind it on Freelander 2's and make it hard to pressure wash it out. I removed mine and would rather attend to stone chips and hidden paintwork rather than have a constantly wet muddy strip that is inaccessible and leads to rot. These strips only last about 5 years before they start to come loose anyway and aren't that cheap to buy. Just my thoughts on it.

Did mine and it didn’t work out, in fact I think it trapped moisture despite being packed with waterproof grease. Going to treat them and leave the strips off, and just make sure they’re properly cleaned and maintained every time.

I've found bitumen roof paint to be ideal for Land Rovers of all types, cheap and effcient. I also use a stuff called Vactan as rust killer and sealeant. Started using that in the MOD. Easy to use. Appears expensive at first , but goes a very long way.

I wouldn’t do this. You are just trapping moisture. It’s a good idea to take the sill trim off every other year and clean out any crap that’s got behind it, and take the wheels off a couple of times a year to clean behind the arch liners, and then waxoil. But putting edge trim on double skins is just asking for rot.

I think I'd have used Waxoyl instead of petroleum jelly on those edge strips. I know the white spirit softens the material briefly, but once it's evaporated and settled down you've got some positive extra rustproofing waiting to creep into any gaps rather than slippery goo that's equally at home on a baby's bottom...

I'm inclined to agree - but in my experience Waxoyl is a little bit on the thin side. Bilthamber do a nice solid version of their Dynax UB which you can brush or push into channels and holes, and I've found this is that bit firmer and stays in place longer. So I'd probably use that and then spray Waxoyl or Dynax UB on the inside once the strip has been fitted to seal the edge good and proper.

Good video. Just bought my first RR, an L322 Vogue TDV8 with full service History, but with grot in exactly these areas. I've taken to it with an angle grinder, and now I'm back to good metal. So welding Kit will be coming out shortly!

Thanks for the video and for putting the links in the description including the plastic sill clips. No reason not to do this now. I probably wouldn't put the protective strip on from the freelander as i would rather keep an eye on the progress of rust. Very helpful video. Thanks

2002> RR L322 don't have full profile wheel arch liners and rot out horribly in less than 10 years, subframes rot out horribly , most 2002-2005 are MOT failures now🤦‍♂️😷 1994> RR P38 have full profile plastic wheel arch linners, don't rot out, wheel arches still good @ 26+ years and chassis still solid , most are still good 🤔🙄

Fantastic video. I'm on the verge of signing on the dotted line for a 2010 TDV8 Vogue and was worried about the curse of rot in the wheel arch area. The one I'm looking at has edge protection strip all the way around the arches in one continuous piece so has likely had the treatment you demonstrated done already. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on here. Very much appreciated. Just subscribed to your channel 😊

Could you repeat a couple of more times what the reason for the rusting is? I think you maybe mentioned it once.. but could you repeat? I think it was something with mucc or grime?

You say you’ve seen plenty of RRs with rusty sills and jacking points. Can these be repaired easily or is this too costly for some older models.?

Hi, Darren! I'm based in the north of England (West Yorkshire) and have used Waxoyl on a lot of old cars and never had any rust return, so 100% success is good enough in my book. I'm not sure how much more effective a treatment could be. Are the alternative products much more expensive? What advantages do they offer? I like the way sprayed Waxoyl gets inside boxes and creeps around spot-welds, but I wouldn't leave it open to road spray and flying gravel on exposed panels unless I was prepared to re-apply it every year (which I'm not!). I agree that a decent flexible rustproofing underseal is essential for stone-chip protection - I've found the thick black squidgy spray-on stuff from Hammerite works well (in combination with Waxoyl). If the inner wings have plastic liners, though, I'd be happy to just have a good layer of (sprayed, not brushed) Waxoyl between me and the salt.
