I grew my first dragon fruit 15 years a go and got one fruit. My mom took over and we've gotten nothing for a decade and a half. Now I'm back and full of hope. Thank you for the detailed video.

I hear that a lot.......do you have two different varieties and pollinate them yourself?

@@frankenfoamy if you’re talking to me, my first run was self pollinating VN White. Now I have about 4 types and have to hand pollinate.

This was a great video! I’ve had two days that have hit 38 and 39 degrees with no damage so far. The only exception may be the American beauty. It has cracked to show the inside of the branch. So far, it does not seem to mind at all and has continued growing. Located in Santa Cruz, CA

I had one night at 39 degrees for a bit... I didn't cover anything. However, unrooted cuttings need to be protected in my opinion.

It is, but the drawback is that it's a slow grower in my experience.

Put the cuttings in the garage or house when it gets below mid 40's until they root... They they will be more resilient.

Any tips on identifying varieties? I contacted the nursery that supplied the big box store and they did not know. I suspect they are cuttings from farmed varieties.

It's hard even with flowers, fruit, and thorns. The term is a NOID or No identification.

I'm being extra daring this year and attempting to grow 2 varieties (red and white flesh). I live in NY in the USA and it gets below freezing in the winter here and there's snow on the ground most of the season. I'm still going to try and make it work somehow! Maybe I could take the plants inside and use a grow light/heat lamp to make sure it doesn't freeze and die?

Yes! I think it's possible, you will need to bring the plants in when it gets below 40 degrees. I root my cuttings in my garage in the winter by leaving a grow light on 24 hours a day. Good luck!

I live in NY too (Westchester county) and a friend is giving me some cuttings. I plan on bringing it inside for the winter and take it out summer time. Don’t know if this is sustainable as the trees reach mature size, I don’t know if a small greenhouse will help and keep it protected all winter long.

one blanket or tarp and a heat lamp or grow light on an extention cord is all you need if it's getting to be big

How is it going? I am attempting to grow DF too and I am in Northern Italy. I have a 2 year old noid undatus plant that topped the trellis this year and I also bought a Sugar Dragon cutting because I hope it will bloom earlier and be able to set fruit before the cold season starts. I move my plants inside in November (in a cool room around 10-15 °C without watering) and put them outside in march usually but they actively grow from may to september/october. Will it be enough to set fruit or is the season too short?

Increase of temperature by artificial means may lead to fungal attacks to the plants.

That can be true. The challenge in our climate is that we get some fog and dew forms on the plant in the fall/winter. As a result, "rust:" forms on some varieties.

Great video and examples on cold weather protection for backyard growers. I've gotten 4 days so far of low 30s temps where my birdbath water has frozen and I've protected them with plant blankets and I don't see any damage so far. I put my smaller plants ant seedlings in a plastic house under my pergola were they get filtered sun and they are actually still growing. I don't see any signs of rot or damage thus far. Are you doing any feedings, fertilizers or any other supplements at this time of year? Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences, very helpful.

Hi! Thanks for the comment. I have lot's of growth this fall too :) I give earthworm casting tea to the plants still growing but that's it. I am working on a nice top dressing with bat guano and more, but will apply that in January/February.
