Probably the most thorough video on how to keep my koi safe from herons. Any Perón wanting to build a koi pond should definitely take notes! Thank you!

My heron statue has scared off red tail hawks and Turkey vultures as well as a Great Blue heron. I do move it to a different location every couple of days and I took it in during mating season this past summer but I’m thinking of getting a second one to put out with it this next year during mating season. Then I’ll take one of them back in when mating season is over. Unfortunately our pond does not have steep sides and has lots of great places for a heron to wade in to fish. We do have an area that is 4 ft deep and I put caves in the shallower areas for my goldfish to hide. We’ve only seen the predatory birds once at different times during the summer and they all eyed our heron statue and then decided to leave empty beaked.

Thank you. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this subject. What camera do you recommend?

There are lots of different outdoor security cameras out there and I don't have a strong opinion on any particular one, so perhaps someone else can chime in and add their thoughts here. Important things to look for though are night vision, as wide a viewing angle as possible, and a camera that is either continuously filming (which is best) or is motion activated but takes long videos.

How do you keep your water so clear…very nice!
@kissaquaticsystems55252 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Clear water means almost all nutrients are stripped out of the water column (or a really good uv sterilizer, which I don't have). It's a big topic, perhaps for a future video...

@@kissaquaticsystems5525 That would be fantastic!! I do have pretty clear water, but not without work. Adding Bacteria and new water etc. always admire a nice clear pond!! Would love to share ideas! I’m going to join your page and thanks for taking the time to reply…have a blessed day!

We tried the fishing line this fall & winter - it didn’t help - thinking about adding decoy swans

I’ll agree with you 100% on the decoy . Didn’t do a thing to deter them in my pond. Also the motion detection sprinkler failed miserably . I have deep water and a big rock cave. My Koi run and hide every time I come close. Eventually they come out because they know I’m the guy who feeds them. So I still have netting because I simply don’t trust anything else. Anybody want to buy a decoy cheap? 😂

Funny, some people really swear by those motion activated sprinklers, though many don't have success with them as well. Guess you have to hope for a dumb heron for it to work. I also suspect they're getting more and more used to our tricks

@@kissaquaticsystems5525 I saw a video on here where a guy showed a recording of different attempts to get them to work. Funny as all get out . A heron was actually standing there while the sprinkler hit him. Like he actually enjoyed it. Finally the guy put about 4 different ones around. I had an idea to make an animated ( mechanical ) decoy. I’m sure that would work. Just need the time and money lol.

My co-worker says his 10 gauge really works well on herons.
