please help, i am looking for info everywhere! i planted a bare root sweet cherry last year, headed it and left 5 buds to start the first scaffold. The whip got beautiful healthy leaves on the trunk, but more what I would call "spurs" but not clearly branches? Hmmm she was a "whip" as in a tall branchless bare root stick when I got her (via post, perhaps that was very traumatic) but I will say her whip looked thicker then the peach and apple I also planted that day. I just hope all three made it through this crazy winter we are having this year... they are supposed to be on zone 3 rootstock, we will see.

Hello there! Love this video and have been cheerfully pruning my youthful cherry for 2 years to get this going. However, I have observed a problem. The cherry is putting out a lot of burr knots, which I gather are small roots, on the trunk and particularly where I've pruned the stems in a previous year. I think the reason is that the tree is planted too close to a North Wall in the UK, and it's not getting enough light. Do you have any advice? I've read you can chisel off the burrs, but that feels like I'm inviting disease in. I could move the tree, obviously - but maybe I'd be better off starting from scratch? Or should I risk leaving it and seeing if it can survive in situ? I love its position and it's growing well. But every season brings a new cluster of burr knots which I gather will weaken the branches. Any advice appreciated. I love my tree!

Try to reduce pruning, and give the tree a chance, maybe it will be able to cope with more sun when it grows.The next time you plant a tree, make sure the place is well ventilated and sunny.

If you have flowers but no fruit, it is possible that the problem is low temperatures or you don't have pollinators. As far as pruning is concerned, everything is possible, although it will take years to correct it to the desired shape.

Using mazzard root stock is it beneficial to have 5 leaders to start from for the first stage? I have a small tree going into it's 3rd year which i want to convert to kgb. It has a fifth branch which is weaker than the others at the very top. I'm not sure if I should keep it or trim down to the 4 equal leaders. Thank you for any advice and thank you for your channel

Is there a way to send you a picture of my black tartarian cherry tree? It's at the end of its 2nd season. The 3 main branches are a bit too high and vertical. I was thinking of pruning them off closer to the bottom and keep some of the narrower ones that move outward at a better angle....then prune them back to 5 to 10 inches to make them the same approximate height. I can see if you're in the Cherry growing business for commercial sales this would all be important and you would probably have a labor for us to do do it but the backyard garden is not going to go through this every year this is ridiculous I had a cherry tree in my first yard I never touched it and I got all kinds of cherries off the bottom part in the top half of the tree was so big I left that up there for the birds I can see we're shaping a tree would be important when it's starting out but once it's a mature cherry tree in the yard a little maintenance is okay but not to the extent where you're cutting back every limb every year it is certainly not going to happen with my cherry tree

The KGB system is for the commercial cultivation of high fruit caliber and easy harvesting. If you want cherry trees for your yard where you will have a tall canopy that will provide shade, do not cut them if that is important to you.

One tree had all the dormant buds rubbed off or dried off.....as it's been severally weeks now I see some buds finally pushing, but they are not in the position I will want for the tree. Should I just let it grow this first year and store all that energy and do a topping cut next year to start my branch scaffolding? Currently the lowest branch is about 30 inches above ground. Or should I simply top it now? I'd think that would be more risky. I want low scaffolded tree. I live in a residential neighborhood on a typical house lot, so I need to train and prune small. Thanks!

Try not to touch anything the first year, maybe by cutting a little bark at the height you want, it will encourage a bud to break out, but that is very difficult and unlikely.

When cutting look at the direction of the buds. The last bud will make a new leading branch in the direction of the bud. That way you can control the way the tree grows. Look for buds in all directions for a balanced tree and away from the center of the tree for better airflow

Not at all in May, you have to wait for the plant to rest. Pruning is done before the beginning of the growing season, when night temperatures rise below zero.

It seems you are pruning in early spring, is that right. I was told pruning of cherry trees was done at the end of summer only. What do you reccomend?

it all depends on what kind of climate you have, if it's dry and the temperatures are above zero you can do it during the winter as well. It is ideal at the end of summer when the weather is warm and dry.
