I'm glad I watched this one. I thought the old branches needed taking off. I would have taken off the older stalks and left the new sprouts. I have 3 bushes I leave for the cardinals. The cuttings take in acid soil, if you can keep the chickens out, And never water with the hose, the water comes out of the lime rock aquafer.

I live in Southwest LA and I have thick clay soil, so I planted all of my blueberry plants in 20 gallon containers. I mixed peat moss and pine chips and a little compost and they love it. I add about 1/4 cup fertilizer in early spring with an additional feeding later. So easy to control the pH in soil. My 3 year old plants are huge and thriving.

ThymeToSow thanks for sharing. I may need to try that method. I can’t find anyone that’s had any luck with blueberries around here. We’re really close to the Mississippi River so we are blessed with very fertile soil. It’s just real alkaline . It’s not unusual for me to get a ph of 8 sometimes.

I planted blueberry bushes in ground in 2019 and i believe that with a mixture of all the rain we had that flooded our yard and the oak trees we planted them next to, they just weren't happy. Just this week i dug them up and put them in pots to hopefully try and save them. This will be the 2nd year of owning them. Should i wait til next year to prune?

Lime makes the soil more basic, while blueberries prefer acidic soil. Most garden vegetables prefer neutral or slightly basic soil, but blueberries are the exception.

I took some cuttings from Rabbiteyes and they successfully took but after a year in a pot I have one central 'trunk' as it were with quite a few canes branching up from the one central point. There are no other canes coming up from the crown. Should I remove all but three or so of the current canes and cut those back by half? Will this force the bush to push new canes from the roots under the soil and thus widen the crown? The plants are still in felt pots approx 12" round by 12" deep. I’m going to put them in 21 Gal pots this winter. The new pots are 22 in dia by 17 in deep

Hi Danny. Just watched your video I have three bushes that I have never pruned and sadly have no idea the variety. Two of the three have produced a good bit of fruit but they have grown tall and legging. I trimmed the internal branches as you said. However I have some limbs that are 10 feet tall. I have all the bushes inside a netting to prevent the birds from eating them all. But should I harshly cut the really long limbs? I know they need pruned. Just don’t want to impact my fruit as last year was a good year. I live in GA (ATL area). Thanks much.

I trim our blueberry bushes much the same for the airflow. Any reason behind 6 stalks? I seem to trim my bottoms limbs further up than yours for no particular reason other than aesthetics for me. What is your average from ground to bottom limbs? Any reason for that distance that is better for the bush? I also keep mine about 5.5' to 6' tall as well. Thanks for the video.

Fyi, water sprouts are aggressive energy consuming growths that detract fruiting ability, not the new canes you were removing. Blueberries only fruit on 1 yr growth. Pruning is essential to maintain fruiting. It's best to allow canes to mature and grow fruit for 5-6 years and allow new ones to mature and replace the oldest ones completely. Tldr: not intended to correct, but your method will deminish the fruit yields of your plants in time. Don't take my word for it. Ask or read local extension office for info.

I'm no expert on this by any means! I'm just about 2yrs in on my BB's, this yr will be 3rd season. I know there are many and I mean many varieties of BB's for the southern regions and the northern regions. From 1' to 8' and now for hanging pots as of this year or last year! . I was under the impression that BB's are bushes not tree's. Or are they of the 8 foot varieties? Might as well be a tree at that point! LOL! The real question- why prune the young shoots when in roughly 2/3 yrs your now 4 yr old canes are going to drop in production? Wouldn't you want to start new canes now and not prune all of them. I'm speaking of the outer canes not the inside canes. Thinning out the inside= air flow, that I get. Im just trying to understand your method, so I can determine whether or not to apply it to my BB's. I will agree with you feeding method! I did a mid summer feed and still got die back here in lower NY(zone 7 or 7a pending what chart you look at.). Early summer feed will be the last feed this yr for my guys and girls.
