I get the idea, but I have Chinese jupiters which are over two years old. The big branches that arc are way too long. Do I cut back every one of these? Now they are touching house so cut back all at different places ? I'm afraid landscapers aren't going to take the kind of time needed. He said they will look newly cut for a year. That didn't sound good. So cut back where touching house and juniors next to each other? Thanks

Does it matter what time of year the pruning is done? It appears early part of winter or midwinter

I've pruned mine all times of the year. Hard to do wrong any time of the year.

Thanks for the video. a few comments and questions, if you will. First, I think the plants look awfully dry. I am not sure pruning them when so dry is a good idea, unless the weather is cooler? I understand the staggering of the cuts, but also what about cutting the upper branches as well rather than just focusing on the lower, longer stems? It would help your video if we had more of a look at the whole plant rather than close ups of parts of the plant, so that we can see their shape and the line of the junipers along the sidewalk. Thanks.

Laura Singer Hi Laura, thanks for your comments. In Colorado, we typically do a lot of pruning in February and March when other plants are dormant, so that's why they look dry. You could prune the upper branches but I like to hide the pruning cuts by tucking the cuts under upper branches. The biggest thing to avoid is shearing or straight cuts along the sidewalk. Otherwise, use your own artistic flair!

this looks like the type of juniper I'm trying to remove completely, do you have any advice other than a mattock

If you find the main stem and cut it off it won't come back (unlike deciduous shrubs). If you want to plant in the same spot, then you'll need to remove the stump, but otherwise it's not necessary. Good luck!

I cut mine all the way back, thinking it would never grow again since the top layers were all Grey and dead. But had i not cut back to the roots, maybe it would have sprung some new growth. Does anybody know if the dead ones will ever grow again? I only cut too far back on one of the six i have.
