Let's be honest! There are sooooo many times we did our study, reading the breeder information and description about a rose, bought a rose happily into our garden and put it at the best spot in our garden. Few months later, that rose that is supposed to be "compact" turned into a climber!!! Worst is we have no space for it to climb or peg those long canes. This is especially common for those of us in the warm climate (in the South) where every single rose wants to climb. LOL!! What do we do? Today, I am going to show you what how to prune those leggy rose into bushier rose by showing you the steps and a few examples that I did the same in my garden. Feel free to leave a comment if you have any question. Happy pruning!! LOL!!

I read about this method and then when I searched it on KZbin saw your video and SO happy I did! I bought 6 JFK hybrid tea bare roots in 2021 and they were so tall and not bushy enough by the end of summer, so I’m going to do this method in 2022 and pray it becomes more bushy and I like them better. Thank you for the great video!

I love this method especially when space is an issue. Plus, HT rose like JFK will not really bloom well as a climber. Pruning down HT rose is the best way to promote more blooms for sure.

Great video! I approach my roses as I do other plants. If it gets leggy or spindly I just cut back the leggy canes where I want the new growth to start.

Yes. You can continue to prune all the lateral shoot on the main canes to make it even bushier. It will looks like an umbrella tree eventually with bloom all at the same level.

You are welcome! I love this method a lot coz it helps to maintain a bushy rose instead of leggy rose. I do not have a lot of space to train leggy rose.

Thanks for making this video. I 've done similar pruning to a rose bush that I have and it still insists on growing single, very tall shoots. Do I just need to keep a watch on it and as a new shoot starts to grow, prune it again before it gets too tall? Thanks for your help!
@backyardparadise2334
@backyardparadise2334 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. You continue to prune it again until it stops sending out new long shot.

Very useful video! Thank you very much. As a beginner I am afraid of pruning strong long canes, it seems like pity to cut it :) do you think this will work for Evelyn? Mine has very long thick stif canes, I doubt whether I try keeping it as a bush or leave it to be a climber 🤷‍♀️

Can a cut back the leggy branches at any time? I mean it is June now is that too late to cut off some of the leggy branches?
@backyardparadise2334

Not too late. You can prune them anytime you want to during the growing season.

Thank You for sharing this tip! I have a DA Tranquility that gives me octopus canes. I have it on a trellis, but it doesn’t give me blooms. Should I use this method to get more blooms instead of having a whole bunch of tall canes?
@backyardparadise2334
@backyardparadise2334 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Absolutely!! Tranquility is not a climber variety. You will get more blooms with this method actually

Is there a certain time of the year to do this?
@backyardparadise2334
@backyardparadise2334 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. As long as you continue to fertilize your rose after pruning, the rose will grow back fast

I purchased several roses from Heirloom roses this year, some are climber. I have long shoots sprouting up everywhere and I was told not to cut young roses so they can get established..What do you think?.
@backyardparadise2334
@backyardparadise2334 2 жыл бұрын
For climber, you don't really prune them. For shrub, you can definitely give a light prune to help it to branch out. Some roses grow faster than the other, do not prune the roses based on its age but more on its size.

@@backyardparadise2334 Sorry but I'm alittle slow🤪🤣🤣..What do you mean size ? All my rose brushes have gone crazy..I recently talked to you about Earth Angel. It's a huge monster with 0 blooms. I have several other rose bushes that has blooms but long shoots all over the place. Do I size them down ?
@backyardparadise2334

@@wandajazz1061 Yes. You can definitely size it down. It is a shrub rose. You can cut it however way you want to. I released a video last week about how to prune your shrub rose for fall. You should check out that video.
