Should pepper plants have added fertilizer applied and if so, what and how often?

I try to prep the soil so good that it doesn't need it. I put dead fish in the ground in the spring. I added heavy compost to the soil. I mulched with grass clippings to retain moisture and add nitrogen. When I planted I also added some bonemeal and more compost to the holes. A top dressing of fertilizer before a rainstorm every few weeks will be enough. Nitrogen early to grow the plant then a fertilizer higher in phosphorus and potassium as flowers and fruits form
