my Philadelphus is a straggly, very thin long stalks... looks like a dead plant most of the time. but come late spring, the ends of it grow leaves and beautiful flowers. i have no idea how to "revive" the tall thin stalks. worried that if i prune them, the plant will die for sure

Hi. Many thanks for messaging and for watching the video. As you have now missed the opportunity to do any pruning it’s best to look at improvements to create a better plant. Is the plant in full sun or partial shade? The more shade that the plant is in the more stretched/taller the stems will grow before flowering. Do you feed the plant? Feeding the plant in spring, starting end of April, will encourage better growth and a more full looking plant. Additionally, ensuring that the plant has sufficient moisture availability throughout spring and summer will also allow for good growth. If you prune straight after flowering, even just cutting the top from the existing thin stems, you will encourage growth of more shoots. The new shoots will then carry flower the following year as Philadelphus produce flower on older shoots. Pruning the thin shoots will not kill the plant but pruning should be done in late summer. @@diyhomeandgardening wow - thank you for a quick reply. yes, it's in a part shade so that would explain why it shot up (about 1m) and I'll give it some food to encourage growth. when it's time to prune (in few months), can i shorten the old stalks and leave just 20cm or so?

@@66wildrose Glad to help. You didn’t mention which variety you have but yes you can prune the plant back hard following flowering. Personally I would wait to see how much fresh growth develops and judge accordingly. It might look better to half way the older stems to balance the plant, or do that with 2 stems and cut the third back harder. @@66wildrose Yes it’s the same variety as in my video. The x doesn’t stand for anything in this instance as the plant is not a cross of species. I think the x is an American plant thing whereby the growers don’t quite understand differences between species and variety😄 It’s the most vigorous variety so can tolerate a lot more than the smaller types. The main thing is the plant will be fine following some pruning. Just message closer to the time if you want more guidance.
