How to Prune Sub-Shrubs like Lavender, Thyme & Sage

We call them herbs, but lavender, thyme, sage, rosemary and other similar plants are sub-shrubs - and are like tiny trees. For that reason, their pruning requirements are different from those of herbaceous perennials, and in this video, Robert Pavlis explains how to prune them.

I took a shovel and chopped a part off, it is that thick. It grew back beautifully and I achieved the size I wanted. It did not hurt the plant at all. This sage stays green all winter.

I have usually lightly pruned them twice a year: in the spring to gather herbs and in the fall after flowering. Better to prune that hard every spring? Seems like plants won’t get very big that way…Mostly thinking about sage and lavender

Thanks for that segment, Greg. I didn't know about proper pruning of sage and other shrubby herbs. I have them in my garden, and this helped alot. Am I right to assume oregano and thyme should be treated the same?

I’ve found that oregano and thyme require a hard prune, otherwise they’ll kill themselves from getting too laggy and spreading out
