I wrote a mystery novel not because I wanted to, but because I was told I could, by so many family and friends. Apparently I have a gift that I needed to share. It took a few short months and many bottles of wine to complete. Now I have a 55k word novel that is well received and am encouraged to get it published. Navigating the many videos and websites online in order to sort through the fluff and scam attempts is daunting. I have read Mr. Jenkin's work in the past and respect him as a writer. This video is a healthy dose of reality and offers some great insights into the real world of publishing. I will add it to my growing list of resources in my quest to find the best option as a novice writer.

Thank you Jerry. I love your videos. They are very enlightening. I wrote a book about my Mom’s life. She lived a rough life in the foothills of Kentucky, during the onset of World War ll. When she was 12 she lost her Dad after he was shot by his own father in-law. My book entails many hard times dealing with the aftermath of this tragedy. I’m also writing the follow up to that book. It is about my tragedy as a three year-old. I set myself on fire and ended up on the brink of death. It is about how the love of family can get you through even the worst of times. It covers many things but most of all, growing up in a small town dealing with the third degree scars that left me feeling unworthy in life. For now I am self publishing mostly for friends and family. It has taken me far too long to get this far. But I’m determined to see it through. Maybe in time I may publish these traditionally. My question is….can that be done after I have done the self publish platform. I love your books and your son’s work as well. Thank you and God Bless.

My biggest issue with trade publishing is the time-frame. It can take many years for a book to make it through the agents and into the hands of readers, especially if you don't already have an agent. If you are the 'write and forget it' type who has plenty of patience, this is a fine method. However, someone with my level of patience - it would be a nightmare. I think self-publishing is the way to go if you want to develop the skills needed to do it correctly, and have the time and desire.
