Please be gracious as I don't make videos very often! I made this video on a whim and forgot some vital information.
*When you want to turn your needle in a different direction, turn it when it is down and in the fabric.
*When you are done filling in your section, hold onto your last thread, pull out your punch needle, and snip the thread at the base. The threads are all close enough together which makes them secure so that they don't unravel.
Here's the link to a supply video that I made recently. Hopefully this will help you get a visual of what you need to get started and HOW to get started!

SUPPLIES USED:
DMC brand embroidery floss (I purchased these from Michael's)
Weaver's Cloth (fabric - I picked this up at JoAnns)
Wooden Frame (repurposed paint canvas) or Stretcher Bars
Tacks (I now use a staple gun as it's MUCH easier to use and quicker)
Scissors
Cameo Ultra Punch Needle: (comes with small, medium, and large needles) needle here: amzn.to/2x3F44J

So far out of the videos I have watched on Punch hole embroidery this one has been the most helpful. I use to do embroidery but got away from it & now do a lot of cross stitch, but this may get me back to doing some. Thanks

Very nice video thank you. I used to make this stitch 40 years ago, I would put glue in the back, so it would not unravel unless I would put in a frame. This brought back memories!!! Thank you again.

Years ago i purchased a punch needle kit with three different sizes of needle, a kit of marked fabric with floss/thread/yarn , an adjustable hoop with two sizes, and two books on How To, with more patterns inside. I re-found it two days ago - I'm slowly going through my stash and finding all sorts of amazing and interesting things - and there, in all it's glory, was the stack of supplies and such. I still haven't tried, but at least I'm watching videos proactively. It's nice to think of getting another craft under my belt. I hope y'all are moving forward faster than I am!

Please help if you can. I just purchased this needle and ready to use on a pattern that I purchased. I'm confused on the pattern it calls for small needle , 1 thread set at 4 mm, and size med needle, 3 threads set at 18 mm and 24 mm. I understand the threads (been embroidery long time). My question is - - - do you know what number settings on the needle = cm. Since the needle only goes up to 12 on adjustments thus the reason I'm confused.

I'm confused, you don't have to knot it or anything at the end? Can't you just pull the back when you're done and the whole thing will unravel?
@paisleypanther
@paisleypanther 6 жыл бұрын
Jin - needle punch is a more delicate kind of embroidery. Each stitch is vulnerable to pulling out the whole thread, so there isn't a point to knot the end, because it only protects one stitch. You could knot after every stitch, but it's too time consuming. I think people who make rugs (or other high-wear needle punch work) add an adhesive to the back side when they're finished.

@SumiandMe

I don't think it's technically labeled as weaver's cloth. It's just any kind of fabric that has a visible weave but is tight enough to hold your stitches and flexible enough to pierce with the punch needle.

@kimberlyglauninger9619
@kimberlyglauninger9619 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Heidi! Thank you for your comment! This is a lot different from traditional embroidery. There's not really a way to secure the thread, but you can use glue or a backing to help secure your threads.
@mycelleismybffl

but once you cut off the loose threads can't u still just easily pull it all out? like is there a way to actually make it secure?
@paisleypanther
@paisleypanther 6 жыл бұрын
mycelleismybffl You can pull it out at any time - needle punch /rug hooking relies on a high stitch density to make it minimally durable. These pieces aren't for high wear areas; they're decorative. There's no point in knotting the end because all the stitches are equally vulnerable as the end. You would have to knot between every stitch to make it durable... At which point you should just choose a different embroidery technique thats more durable
@28LouiseL
@28LouiseL 6 жыл бұрын
paisleypanther what kind of technique of embroidery would you recommend for clothes if I may ask?
@paisleypanther
@paisleypanther 6 жыл бұрын
Louise Lebrun I'm far from an embroidery expert... But most stitches will work fine. The key points are: a) use short, non-loopy stitches so they don't get caught on things & b) work with a durable thread (embroidery floss is good - silk thread or delicate ribbon not so much) in high wear areas. I have actually seen rug-hook stitch as seen in the video on clothes, but usually it is glued to a non-fraying fabric like felt to secure it, then the felt is sewn to the peice as a patch.

I've been doing rug hooking/needle punch for awhile now, but have had a difficult time framing like you have here. I've scoured the internet for more tips on that but can't seem to find much. I have the wood parts, and have the fabric parts. Then I stretched the fabric over the wooden frame and used a staple gun to staple it down. Maybe I just need some more practice at that part. But I prefer this tack look that you have. Do you mind sharing some techniques on that?
@SumiandMe
@SumiandMe 6 жыл бұрын
Skyler Scheere most people tend to use a staple gun, but since I don't have one, I decided to use tacks! What exactly are you have trouble with? Is it the actual stretching of the fabric and having it be taught? Maybe I'll make a video on how I did mine. Don't feel bad, I had to redo the stretching of my fabric quite a few times until I was happy with it!
@S.D.S08
@S.D.S08 6 жыл бұрын
Yes - the actual stretching of the fabric so it's not all wonky and crooked. After watching your video the other day I ordered some upholstery tacks from Amazon to try that out instead. Plus it looks way nicer than staples. The information on stretching fabric for this purpose is very sparse - I think it'd be awesome if you did a video on that. Last night I tried it again and had better luck with it, and think part of my difficulty is that I've only attempted it with monks cloth. My understanding is that linen+cotton blend is a little less stretchy?

Your choice of fabric depends on if you're using embroidery thread or yarn. If you're using yarn, you'll want a larger punch needle and some monks cloth. I've also seen people use burlap, but I'm not sure about the stability and reliability of it as it can unravel very easily. If you're using embroidery thread and a smaller punch needle, you're going to want to use weaver's cloth, or a tight woven cotton / linen blend. The weave must be visible, but tight enough to keep your work nice and taught.

Theodosia Kontzoglou it’s all up to your preference! The intended use for it though is to show the loops from the backside. Many artists use the loops to form pillows, stockings, etc. and it looks beautiful. For this piece in particular, I wanted the clean stitches to be the front side.

Thank you for your video. But it's not as you said. I purchased one upgraded punch needle set and it worked though it took me few days to figure out. I don't think it not a worth buying and actually you got some mistakes when you were using this pen. There is a thing called embroidery stabilizer backing which can keep the embroidery stay. Anyway, for people who likes old school carft, it's a worth trying.

Good morning .. How do I install the thread well
@SumiandMe
@SumiandMe 5 жыл бұрын
When you insert the punch needle through your fabric, be sure to leave about an inch (pull it through with your hand and secure it with your finger before pulling it back out). Many people secure their entire piece by using some kind of adhesive (many use elmer's glue).

Thank you so much! This is actually a custom design. I traced a plate that I had for the circle, and then used a ruler to create different shapes and triangles inside :)

A regular rug hooking frame with rug hooking gripper teeth works best for punch needle. Pull it tight, the teeth don't pull the fabric apart, and it's drum tight immediately. I use a small frame by www.woolenwhimsies.com for my punch needle frame although you could easily make one youself with separately purchased supplies. Fun hobby! I love it.

But you can easily secure it! And if it's just used for wall art, there's nothing that will cause it to unravel.

This is a common occurrence if you're pulling up to high when you bring your punch needle up and out of the fabric. Try "grazing" the surface of the fabric when you bring your punch needle up and out - this should make all the difference. Please let me know how this goes and if you have any other questions! :)
