Put lava on bottom to take up bulk of space....lay a piece of metal screen down ( just in case so you wont have to pick threw them later) then poke holes in sceen for burner and glass on top....saves a ton

I read, however, that you must NEVER use lava, on the bottom with fire glass, in a propane fire pit.

@@Gavin1ryan the lava rock is porous. It "can" in perfect circumstances, hold in the unburnt propane/natural gas and you'll get a "pop" like in a BBQ. Issue is that there's a bunch of super hot glass bits on top and it can Chuck them out if the pit. I personally don't see it as an issue unless you have a huge layer of lava rock below, so much as to cover the burner. but this is the reason folks don't do it.
