Salt has worked for me before. Usually inexpensive and in most Kitchens. Thank you for the holiday reminder that safety’s 1st.

This is your daily reminder to NEVER throw water on a grease fire. This has been a public service announcement

This happened to me once while cooking at a relative's house who lives out of state. I was heating some oil for making French fries. My aunt has a glass top electric cooktop, however I personally have a gas cooktop, and am used to having rapid and even control of the temperature by observing the flame. Anyway at my Aunts house, the oil began to smoke, so i quickly turned the burner down to medium-low. Unfortunately for me, i am not used to how electric cooktops don't have the rapid temp change, as with gas, so the oil caught fire, and since that particular pan had no lid that I could find, i slid a cookie sheet over, then very carefully reached around the pot to get to the knob and turn the burner OFF. (Another reason I personally prefer gas ranges, the knobs are in the front and easier to reach without burning myself in this situation) anyway my quick action saved my Aunt's house.

A tip for frying at home: Throw a small piece of whatever you are frying in the oil as it heats up. You will be able to see when the oil is hot enough to fry in without trying to look for rippling or smoke. If the oil is smoking your temp is too high, and as you said it should be pulled from the heat.

Salt, or baking soda, but usually smothering it or fire extinguisher is best. NEVER USE WATER ON GREASE OR ELECTRIC FIRES

The way to put out a grease fire is baking soda or salt or lid , but not something that is similar to salt and baking soda like sugar , flour.

I put the lid on and ran it outside because it was smoking so bad, I ended up dropping it on my rug in the panic and burned a hole in the rug but thankfully no fire on the rug but had to replace it

I just used flour and it put the fire out, so why are people saying not to use it, and the fire was on the stove not the pot
