Been flyfishing for 22 years and I've been LOVING your "getting started" series. Quick question. My dad taught me to lightly rub the tip of the ferrule on my nose to give it a very very light coat of oil (maybe also to remove any light debris) before doing the twist and push connection. Do you think this is necessary or maybe even harmful to the connection? I'd never dream of waxing the ferrules, but I always perform this little nose ritual out of habit and deference to my dad when I build my rod. Thanks!

What I like about the alignment dots on my Echo rod is the ability to keep my attention in that 'comfortable work space'. No looking left and right away from what my hands are doing. So much easier. Why don't all rod builders add alignment dots?
