In this video I show how to diagnose a bad hybrid battery in a 2004 prius. This process would be the same for all 2003-2015 prius's. OBD Reader used in this video - amzn.to/3lM1rBM Cheaper OBD option - amzn.to/3m7VejJ

Bro....thank you, thank you, thank you. Potentially $30 for a module as opposed to $3500 for an entire pack is a huge difference. Thank you for sharing this man
@johnrambo13493 жыл бұрын
You must be getting rip off if someone is offering you $3500 for the whole pack. Cause each module is only $30 on ebay. Times that by 28 is only $840 to replace the whole pack. So why the fk would someone offer $3500 when it cost only $840 for the whole pack. Lmao

With my gen 2 the red triangle is on but the car in the upper left hand corner is green. It's a 1 year old rebuilt battery with new cells. The battery shows 14.3 volts on the screen. Any idea's?
@harispap3 жыл бұрын
Nice EXPLANATION! Quick question!!! If you have 2-3 damaged cells, how long should you use the car (prius 2007 in my case) before fixing the problem? I am thinking of buying a used hybrid battery in better condition instead of replacing the cells.
@HEVTech13 жыл бұрын
Using bad modules puts unnecessary stress on the other module in the block. Ideally if you have 2-3 bad modules, you get it fixed ASAP to prevent further damage to the pack. The 2007 Prius battery I retrofitted had random complete engine shutdowns because it could not keep the 12v battery charged using the DC-DC converter.

You can use the free "Torque" app to clear the vehicle trouble codes and it will then attempt to run and only throw the warning/code if the same error threshold is reached.

Blocks 7 and 9 on my battery are bad. Does it seem like the modules towards the middle are commonly the ones which become problematic? Is this due to the middle being the hottest area of the battery?

Yes the middle of the pack tends to be a bit warmer and those modules usually fail first.

When POOA80 comes up, it says the HV battery is overheating but it doesn't say the cause. Could it be the fan, or resistance in the lugs connecting the modules together, or something else?

I know sometimes the battery cooling system get clogged over the years. You might want to blow it out and clean it and make sure the battery cooling fan is still working.

@@travisb1757 I don't know why I'm not getting an alert when people reply, thank you. Oddly enough, there doesn't seem to be any dirt or dust anywhere in the system. Fan is clean and spaces between modules are clean. My 12v went dead within a year. I really hesitate to bring the car to the dealer. I don't trust them to even change the oil. I've got a mess on my hands. And where can I get good modules from? The latest thing is to load test them. Not just check the voltage. I didn't do that when I pulled the battery apart.
@Aria-Invictus2 жыл бұрын
Can you drive a prius without the hybrid battery? My uncle said the smaller battery is what starts the car and the car will go from 2 to 1 engine meaning less power and more gas needed but car will still run while the car dealer is saying you need a hybrid battery to operate the vehicle.
@HEVTech12 жыл бұрын
The 12v battery only turns on the inverter then the entire hybrid system including starting the gas engine is powered by the hybrid battery. You cannot go anywhere without a functioning hybrid battery. You can "limp" home with a couple of bad modules, but the car can also suddenly lose all power so better safe than sorry.
