How to Quickly Pull a Stubborn Drive Axle

All; I couldn’t wait for the 5/8” extension from Amazon and used an 18” long piece of thread stock instead. I spent hours prying, yanking with a dumbel on the end of a big chain. Even with the adapter behind the CV joint, I couldn’t make the slide hammer work w/o the 18” extension. Not only did I not have enough room for a good swing, but what I also think is that the extension also helped line up the hammer jolt with axis of the spline stuck in the differential. The pull has to be straight out from the spline center. If the adapter angle gets a little crooked it won’t release and you’ll spend hours frustrated. With the extension and things lined up, one mild pull on the slide and off it popped.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sounds like it was quite an adventure. I am glad you got the axle out. Before I got the tool and extension it was many hours of no joy. Now once it is all lined up as you described, it is just a light slap with the slide hammer.

@@richardspaulding5035 hey man. I did my replacement today and it went smooth as butter having this little tool to use. Thanks again for showing us. Last one I changed out took me like 6 hours and it was mostly fighting the stupid axle trying to get it out. This time I did everything witools all returned to boxes in less than 3 hours (with a couple of breaks to show my 3 y/o daughter what I was doing). I recommend this tool to anyone doing this job.

They also sell a tool called a Axle Popper. You would use it like a pry bar, but it has two sides like a fork. Slips over the axle like yours exept you give it a shove like pry bar.

Well, on my sienna 2005 passenger side, I rented that precise that tool from oreilly and did not come off with that. I used a pole hitted with it for an hour, then chisel with hammer after 1 1/2 it finally came off. so that tool it self didn't even ticlish the axle

The slide hammer extension can be purchased at harbor freight for $40 and the claw can be purchased at AutoZone for $20. Zorro online has the entire kit including the slide hammer for $105.

I have had good experiences with it. I have not used it on a Toyota yet but on the vehicles I have used it on they pop right out.
