How to raise Mason bees!/These gentle pollinators are very easy to raise and multiply through the seasons. Grab a drink and sit a spell for a free class that is approximately an hour long. My children and I have been doing mason bees for the past 3 years. We love it.

She says a few times the most important part is to follow her drawing with the 3 timelines and I caught Sept 15 or anytime after that is ok to collect and store in fridge. I also heard 50-55 degrees for releasing, but I didn't hear when that usually is or what the other times zones are. Any clarification about the drawing she had?

Thank you. This is fantastic. I can't have honey bees..allergic and don't think I could take care of a hive. I just stay away from bees and let them do their thing but a hive for honey bees is not on my list. Forgot to check youtube ...should have sent for them last month because my fruit trees, which have no bees , have been in bloom for a week. Wish there were a place near me that I could drive to purchase. Nearest I can find is Georgia. Anyone know a place between Syracuse ny, and Scranton pa.???????? Thanks again, great information.

If you are still interested, Crown bees sells solitary mason bees, I am not sure what species/type but i buy both Mason bees and Leaf cutter bees... Good luck.

This was very informative, but, like many things, i have now learned enough to have even more questions, lol! On some of the british gard3ning shows, they just stick reeds in the boxes and that is it. That gave me the impression it was really simple. I didnt know you need to take them out, store in fridge, put in release boxes, etc. I have learned from this class that there is lots more for me to learn prior to starting. Thank you for sharing!

it's not necessary to take them out. I have seen a very succesful wild bee farm that does nothing. just sticks in a round pipe under roof. The only thing necessary is that your try to remove the reeds that have been used so they don't get used another year. Look for reets where there is a hole in the cement, where the bee came out. and make sure there are always enough new reeds available. Doing the professional way of storing in the fridge or cleaning will give you probably only a 10% more bees. Why bother. And you will less cuckoo bee's. But cuckoo bee's are actually good. So again, why bother. Maybe a compromis could be you put filled reeds in a box with a hole, so they can escape when ready, but won't go back into their old reeds to lay eggs. every time a bee gets in a reed he brings some parasites. so used reeds are bad.

You can also use dried milkweed stalks because they are already hollow. Just cut the stalks to the right length of tube.

yeah you can use a lot of free stuff out of nature, but strong paper straws are probably the best. The are equally in diameter all the way. This is not so with nature stuff. so less eggs get layed. Also paper straws breath vapor out from the sweaty cocoons.

I want to use the wooden trays, but is it okay to have square holes? I can easily route out square holes on pieces of wood them stack them.

nope. i've read somewhere that they weren't used, probably because the bee notices that he has to use extra cement to make the square more round. Ofcoure you can try out, but i think you don't get much bee attention.

yes nowadays it's is trendy to have paper drinking straws in drinks, environment friendlier than plastics. so they are easely available all over the internet. also they have a steady diameter, where nature reeds are not straight.
