Finally! I'm a beginner archer and have been having issues with my bow shoulder from day one. I had it sorted but then my alignment was off and I worked very hard on my rotational draw, which I now have nailed down but then my bow shoulder began to roll out of position. I've just tried your technique and it works! I really think it's that part where you put tension on the string a few inches at set up that helps lift the bow, really sets it in place. If I don't do that part, I find it harder to lock my shoulder in place and it raises up or rolls forward. Your videos are a real help so thanks again 🤝

@@RogueArcheryTV Is there any good tricks to a nice consistent release?
@RogueArcheryTV3 жыл бұрын
@@BavonOfficial there are no 'tricks' to a good release. A clean release is a bit like the moment you deploy your parachute when skydiving. It's easy enough to pull the ripcord, but most of the effort is in packing the parachute, checking the harness and jumping from the plane. In this same way, you need good technique structure, correct hook, smooth & directional expansion before you can hope to learn a clean release. Once you have this, releasing is easy, without these, it's impossible.

Incredible explanation! I think I understand the bow shoulder, this makes it easier. My question is the scapula. My trainer says we should rotate inwards on the back to avoid shoulder collapse, what is your opinion on the setup and sensitivity of the bow scapula. Great work, love your channel 🎯💪
@RogueArcheryTV8 ай бұрын
Thank you! The scapular is part of the shoulder girdle, and is connected to the glenoid and clavicle as a unit. By pinning the shoulder "down", this correctly positions the bow side shoulder girdle for maximal stability and engages the correct stabilising muscles. There is no need to overemphasis the scapular position on the bow side.

The idea of pushing the bow instead of lifting it just blew my mind. Retroactively it makes so much sense, your hand is going to be at it's furthest point from you when it's going straight forward at the target, so if you just push it away from you the arm should just scoop upwards until level. Is this right?
@RogueArcheryTV Жыл бұрын
Glad we could assist in a break-through moment! Yes. It's also a function of the tension on the string and the angle of the bow that creates this lift above the target. Does that make sense? 💪🏹🎯🔥

@@RogueArcheryTV definitely a big help! Maybe it's arcing around the draw hand at setup? I've not tried this with the bow yet but I'm trying to get it with the stretch band with little success. Thanks for the reply!!
@RogueArcheryTV Жыл бұрын
@@esnevip I'm not sure what you mean by arcing around the draw hand. Give it a go with the bow and let me know how you go. Follow along with the video and be sure to keep hook tension and the bow shoulder actively pulling down as you extend the bow hand towards the target.
@jamesGT786 ай бұрын
Hey Jarryd. Something I've only recently come across regarding aligning the shoulders. Something I've been inconsistent with since starting archery 15 months ago. I've watched every video on KZbin multiple times and most videos say to rotate the shoulders to get them into line but in doing so, it's very easy to roll the bow shoulder if not done correctly. It's only recently that I watched a video from a guy called Ashe from online Archer academy and he says to rotate the torso from the waste up. I tried it and it felt really good. My shoulders aligned in doing so, so much easier and It took the focus off trying to rotate the shoulders which like I said, it always felt different because I was approaching it wrongly. My whole point in this post is that when talking about shoulder rotation, would it not be better to mention that it's the torso that is meant to be twisted or rotated, which brings the shoulders into line? It was one of those ah ha moments....ive had a fair few of them 😂😂 but it has completely changed how I align my shoulders. It's something I've to work on now but it just feels so much better, rather than when I was trying to rotate my shoulders and not fully twisting my torso and getting different results. My bow shoulder stays in place and the whole movement is alot smaller than what I've been trying for ages to master. I hope you understand where I'm coming from but it's that one little explanation that has completely changed how I align my shoulders now. There's alot of videos about people having issues with their bow shoulder rolling forward and I'm thinking that maybe this could be related to it....well in some cases anyway. That little twist of the torso and the bow shoulder stays put and both shoulders move into alignment. Sry for the long post but what are your thoughts in it? Or am I completely wrong on this 🤦♂️🥴

This is too funny! I literally just watched the video after this one. 😄 Good video! I mean, should one have any purposefully generated tension in the tricep. I’ve been having some issues with my bow arm/shoulder and was also thinking should I let my bow arm just push and rotate from the elbow quite naturally without any further tension. Thank you. 😊
@RogueArcheryTV Жыл бұрын
@@paulavirmasalo to extend towards the target there will be triceps tension, yes. Rotating the arm also requires some pec minor, serratus anterior and subscapularis. This is why it's much easier to think in terms of position rather than muscle tension!

I was wondering if you'd be able to address how to breathe during the shot cycle. For example, it seems natural to me to exhale on the draw (going from set-up to anchor), but then that leaves you holding your breath at full draw/anchor/coming through the clicker. And this can't be ideal. Should we be breathing normally at full draw? I assume we should during SPTs, but not sure about when actually shooting. I don't know if you've touched on this in any other video or whether it might be an idea for a future video. Thanks again for the great content!

How far should I extend my bowside elbow? I find when I fully lock my elbow, it makes me lift my shoulder.
@RogueArcheryTV2 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, yes the elbow should be straight (and the shoulder down). I suspect that this is a proprioception issue and may require some exercises to improve shoulder girdle control. Obviously, I can't see what you're actually doing, but this is not uncommon.
@ThirdLawPair Жыл бұрын
@@RogueArcheryTV Thank you. I've fixed that issue and now I have another. When I moved up in draw weight, I started getting shoulder joint pain. If I protect my draw shoulder by pre-drawing a lot as I raise the bow, it hurts my bow shoulder. But If I protect my bow shoulder by keeping my draw hand at brace height and waiting to pre-draw until I'm above parallel, it hurts my draw shoulder. I found a way to have it both ways, but I don't know if it is bad for some other reason. I set my grip and draw hand with my bow arm bent. This allows my draw shoulder to remain protected by moving the brace height in towards my body. I push my bow forward with the same feeling you describe in this video as I raise my draw side directly upward. So It protects both shoulders, but it means I am adding an extension of my bow side elbow as I raise the bow into pre-draw. If I do that extension with that same feeling, I'm able to keep my bow shoulder down while protecting both shoulders from strain, but I don't know if this strategy has the potential to create some other problems. What do you think?
@RogueArcheryTV Жыл бұрын
@@ThirdLawPair hmmmm... This is something that I'm not prepared to advise on over a message, as I can't see what you're actually doing. You definitely have some good awareness of the shot process, but you need to be careful when it comes to aggravating a shoulder injury. Shooting should not be painful. There are so many variables that it COULD be. I think that you would really enjoy the Rogue Archery Masterclass, as this breaks down these steps in sequence and detail. Alternatively, you can book me for a video analysis consult through my website and I can try and assist you that way.

That advice is often given to coaches in outdoor activities. It has some merit, but since we always face the sun when talking to the people we are coaching (so that they can see what the coach is doing) we should also take into account the potential for damage to the coaches eyes. Sunglasses are ppe not a fashion accessory for outdoor activities coaches.
