WHO AM I?
I’m Ryan Hawk and I’m a writer, podcaster, advisor, and teacher. My favorite thing to do is have a deep, long-form conversation with a thoughtful person. Fortunately, I get to do that often on my podcast, The Learning Leader Show. I created The Learning Leader Show in 2015 as a way for me to follow my curiosity about leadership and excellence with great rigor. It has since been listened to by millions of people in more than 150 countries.
Additionally, I’ve written and published two books. My first: Welcome To Management was named “the best leadership book of 2020” by Forbes. My second: The Pursuit of Excellence ranked at the top of the Amazon charts and Patrick Lencioni said, “this is a must-read book if you care to live an excellent life.”
When I’m not recording podcasts or writing books, I try to help leaders be more effective. Some of the ways I do that: Hosting Learning Leader Circles (paid mastermind groups), 1:1 advising for executives, and my online school, The Learning Leader Academy. Additionally, I’ve delivered keynote speeches all over the world for thousands of people.

6:38 The publisher didn't like the title of the book. Lol! 14:45 "Soft healers make stinking wounds." (Dutch saying) 18:20 Most people in CEO type of roles are not balanced people, it's why they're in the roles. 20:30 NFL quarterbacks have a hard time retiring. It's part of their psychology to crave and need the action. 21:05 Mental atrophy. Your sharpness is never greater than when you're most challenged. You only stay sharp when you subject yourself to incredibly hard, confusing, threatening circumstances. *The dynamic keeps you alive.* 28:20 Preference for people in leadership roles who are a bit unbalanced, have unfinished business, have great ambition and an inbred need to prove something. You feel that heat and passion in the convo, it's highly unresolved energy. The CO. provides a path and an outlet for that. 36:50 It's helpful for CEO's not to overdose on ego. 42:00 Elitist CEO mentality, on their high horse, getting drunk on their own power. There's an enormous gap between being a Snr executive and a CEO. 43:25 CEO is not so much having the material skills, but the psychology is even more important - and is very difficult to acquire. *CEO's are a bit dysfunctional in their psychology.* 45:00 Urge to prove people wrong fills your tanks with jet fuel. (Earl Nightingale, how most entrepreneurs get started) 46:00 Hire people ahead of their own curve, hire people for aptitude more than experience, and give them the opportunity of a lifetime. 50:50 His temperament is more akin to running the army rather than being a political person like a mayor or governor. 51:40 He didn't want to write Amp it Up. Snowflake's CMO pushed him to do it. 56:20 Every business has tons of issues. They're all unique. P/L can tell if a biz is a fat pig. Sales & marketing is 160% of revenue = expensive hobby, not a business. 57:50 Tyranny of location. Where you are going to be geographically used to be a big thing, is now much less important. Silicon Valley is now more of a culture rather than a place. 58:00 Look for jobs that are close to the drivetrain of the enterprise - where things get built, supported, sold - where you're very, very close to the transfer of value. 59:25 Elitist brand name education graduates are averse to getting jobs building and selling something. 1:00:00 Get a job in sales, get close to the customer. Transact and make things happen.
