Just want to add, the importance of stage control in a given situation is pretty much proportional to the range of your weapon. Lance and spear tend to get more out of stage control than, say, katars or gauntlets. That isn't to say that it isn't important on those weapons (for example, gauntlets benefit from stage control if it gives them a situation to push you offstage), but if you play a long range weapon, definitely pay attention to your position onstage.
