Sir im new to all these things , and I've a laptop mainly used for office work ( hp pavilion i 5 , 16 gb ram ) i also dont know much about laptop as well .. My left fan doesn't work properly and that side becomes extremely hot , reaching upto 8 5 to 9 0 degrees before shutting down when playinf high end games like spiderman miles Morales or hitman 3 ... I can bately play these games for 10 mins and then my whole laptop shuts down ... I was thinking of replacing my fan and here I am to know how to apply thermal paste , so how should I apply it ? After putting one drop , should i spread it ? Should we cover something or keep something on top so it doesnt stick to any other nearby things ? Or should we keep it like that ? Writing this before watching Now ill be watch Please i need your help

Put a thin layer on the dye, then spread it around a bit, yes. You do not want to GLOB it on. Just a nice whisper on the CPU and you should do just fine with it.

I am hopeful you reply back, I have a computer that was in the storage box for a year and it was left there open, It probably took a few little falls. now when I decided to turn it on, It wasn't turning on, And I saw the CPU FAN (FAN + Cooler thing ) wasn't properly attached, so i went ahead applied thermal paste and tried attaching it, some of the plastic clips broke but it still attached, although my pc isn't turning on still I took the rams out and placed it back in, still doesn't turn on. The GPU light and a motherboard light does turn on, and when i hit the pc switch button GPU + A side casing fan does move for a mini second and stop ( Cpu fan doesnt ) thats what happens when i hit the switch it doesnt turn on, just a little movement on gpu fan and a casing fan- What do you think I should do ? I live in a very small town, with very bad computer repairmen, if you have a few things to point out, would really apreciate

Sounds like possibly your power supply is having an issue (if not motherboard). Despite getting "some" power - I would try and replace your power suppply first, then try motherboard.
@CelestialArchers4 ай бұрын
please try replacing the CMOS Battery! Also, remove the laptop battery and hold Power Button down for 1 minute to perform static discharge. Then replace battery or you can just use power supply without battery ( try both ways) to see if that powers on your PC. Ensure, that all internal connections from disassembly were OKAY! Please let me know if this fixes the issue.

@oliverlison10 ай бұрын
@@Rafael-b3e3y Remove the heatsink. Clean with alcohol as shown here in this video. A thin layer is enough. Use a spachelor and cover the entire CPU die. The amount of compound in this video is far too much. You could get two cpus re-pasted with that. The task of the themal compound is to form a low resistance bridge to take the heat off the CPU and transfer it to the heat sink. If there is too much thermal compound then the desired effect won't be reached. Use CPUID HW Monitor to check the thermals while using the laptop. I also cleaned the airvents, the heatpipe exhaust and the fan. I think it belongs to that re-pasting cycle. Make sure that the fan does not spin while hoovering the fins of the fan. Don't apply any pressure to the fan, it will cause damage to the bearings of the motor. If you spin the fan, then the generated electricity can cause damage to the logic board. Be careful. Last year, I bought a new laptop for my office work at home - a Dell Inspirion. The fan was spinning all the time. The noise that was generated was quite something. It was annoying because once the CPU heated up, the fan never turned off or lowered the speed to lower level. The fan could always be heard. Manufacturers use cheap thermal past to save money. Especailly at the lower end models like my Dell Inspiron. Now, with the re-pasted CPU and when only doing office work, then I get the impression that the fan stops and only cools through the heat sink. That is better than with the factory thermal paste.

Is ok if that glassy thing is a bit chipped? I have two processors i think, one is for nvidia and one for intel. I cleaned them both with 70% alcohol and wiped fast after with a dry tissue. I cleaned with a vacuum, used some brush head for it.. and after cleaning i found out it was chipped on the glass, does it still work?🥲

I’ve decided to chnage thermal paste after opening my laptop and cleaning the fans, thinking they were the problem for overheating(they were not, it was the thermal paste). Changing thermal paste doesn’t seem like a difficult task, however I’ve noticed that VRM and CPU have different colours of thermal paste?? VRM has white paste, and CPU has grey paste. Hence my question is, are there like 2 different kinds of thermal paste for vrm and cpu? The paste on vrms still seems alright, while the thermal paste on cpu clearly needs to be changes, so shall I just change the cpu thermal paste?? Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, I am not the most tech savvy person and it’s my first time ever fixing stuff in my laptop on my own.

Tha'ts interesting. IT's possible they used different pastes in factory, but you're safe to use one kind when you redo the paste yourself.

If there is not enough thermal paste, will it cause a fan issue? My laptop ocassionally throws a fan error over time where the fan doesnt work at all and the cpu throttles with increasing heat
@ComputerStuff2 ай бұрын
Not enough paste wouldn't cause an issue with the fan. If you're getting a fan error its likely the fan itself is malfunctioning. THose are generally quick and easy to replace.

would isopropyl alcohol work? (70% - 90%)
@ComputerStuff3 ай бұрын
It’s not recommended. I suppose if you had nothing else it wouldn’t kill anything but I wouldn’t risk it on an expensive device.
@Chip-Chapley3 ай бұрын
You'll be fine just use a cloth to apply it and wipe it off clean. You've got more of a chance to kill your board leaving goop on the side of you cpu touching the pcb than you would using isopropyl alcohol on a cpu. The diffrence between denatured alcohol and isopropyl is the presence of toxic chemicals in denatured alcohol(methanol, benzene, pyridine, castor oil, gasoline, and acetone) The percentage is dilution to water. So this goofball using gloves in a non ventilated area like he cares more for his board than his life is the real highlight of this video. That and his spreading of the paste like its not going to be flattened by the heatsink.... just saying don't do what this guy did. Pea sized dot in the center is enough....
@ComputerStuff3 ай бұрын
Another added COA. Do not use Isopropyl alcohol. THIS “goofball” can’t listen much less offer proper advice. You unequivocally will not hurt a GPU or CPU by having “goop” on the circuit. These are non conductive surfaces. @Chip-Chapley needs to go back to ECPI for his bachelors in uselessness. Yes, use less paste than I did in the video. I said as much in the video but clearly listening isn’t a genetic skill. Use gloves, it’ll keep your hands clean from the paste and alcohol. Class dismissed.
