Well I just finished my re-caning chair. The chair is just like this. The screws holding it together were rusted so tight that I had to do it all together. This is my second attempt at a chair/rocker. My first attempt, maybe 10 years ago was just short of a disaster. Your method is excellent/#1/cream of the crop/amazing/peachy/and even better. If I ever have to do another chair re-caning I would not hesitate. I'm sure I could even improve my craftsmanship. Thanks for this video!! And I did this on the morning of my 75th birthday!

@seardna32244 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Worked well. The soaking of the caning was extremely important, I used warm water, in a bath tub 30+ minutes, and I helped the tucking in process by lifting the outer edges to ease the caning in. Otherwise, breakage easily results as its a lot of stress. The sanding of the edges was also a good tip. BTW, I removed the old bead out by carefully using a Dremel with a grinder tip. Thanks again.

A woman in Thailand rented a house, completely furnished, to a nice foreign Western family. The house contained very good pieces of furniture including a beautiful, old French Provincial dining room set. The seats on the chairs were made out of this wicker/webbed material and gave it an antique look. Unfortunately, the man of the house was very obese and in less than 2 years, he had managed to tear off the seats on the chairs with his weight. I often wondered how in the world the landlady was going to fix those chairs, if it was possible at all 🤔🤔🤔. I'm glad I saw this video and saw that there was hope for those chairs. Bottom line, never leave valuable furniture in a house you're renting because for sure, the renters will destroy it or cause damage. The landlady thinking it was safe to rent to foreigners and look what happened. No, I am not the landlady LOL😄 I heard this story from a family member. Wonder if the man got his deposit back. SMH

You could make a wedge using a piece of 5 mm plywood and sand all the edges and round off the two ends. Apply a couple of coats of varnish to stop the moisture from swelling the plywood. A glove or piece of foam will make it comfortable for your hands when using this ‘unique handmade tool’!

Hi I have a cane question, hoping you’ll see this. I’m recaning chair backs, getting cane from a good place, but it has “hairs” on it. How do you remove these? Most caned chairs are very smooth, unless the cane is damaged. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also what is the tool you are using to push the cane in?
@wickerguru Жыл бұрын
Hi, this is quite common. You can easily remove the lifted fibres by burning them off. A stick lighter can be used, however make sure to have a damp cloth at hand just incase !. Otherwise you could snip them off with scissors, or leave them until they gradually wear off naturally. It is possible however that you may have a second grade material. If so, hope that it will be good for a few years.

Hey Andrew, yes use a router, or drill bit. Shave the top curve off the old spline with a sharp chisel before drilling. Drill holes as close as you can to each other. Ensure you only drill down approx 6 mm, then turn the drill bit at 45 degrees to clean out the spline. Do this very carefully so as not to damage the timber frame. Hi. This is a really good video! Informative and easy to follow. I have been asked to make wardrobes with timber frame doors with woven rattan panels. I have never done anything in rattan before. I'm reluctant to take on the project as I am worried that the 2 metre high doors will not stay straight. Have you ever done doors like this and encountered problems? Thanks
@wickerguru4 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul, We fit rattan to doors all the time. The issue you may have is the timber door frame can warp. You have to fit the rattan wet onto the frame, then it's advisable to clamp the doors to stay flat to eliminate any warping. Allow the rattan to dry slow and naturally, so best in a cool area. Hope this helps.
@A_person_of_Interest4 жыл бұрын
@@wickerguru Thank you for the advuce. I was thinking that as the rattan dries and shrinks, it may pull the stiles causing them to curve inwards. I think i will put a central rail in the doors to reduce the area. If I clamp the doors to a flat bench, as you say, I think it'll work nicely. I'm looking forward to making it now. Cheers!

No, it's far better to leave the rattan webbing in its natural state. It will darken with age. Apply Orange Oil will help maintain the rattan. Or you can apply a thin coat of shellac, but only to the top surface, not the underside as rattan should be allowed to breath insuring longevity.

Hi Richard, How can i make my thick rattan outdoor chair and ottoman look newer and conditioned? Do you recommend orange oil or a howard rub conditioner?
@wickerworks-richard38476 жыл бұрын
Hello Libby, your best option is to wash down with sugar soap in warm to hot water to remove any weather and grime. Then once rinsed well with clean water and allowed to dry naturally, you can use a medium to fine sanding sponge to prepare the rattan before applying a couple of coats of exterior polyurethane. Then if you like, apply a coat of Orange Oil. If you apply the O/O without the steps above, then you could be disappointed with the result. Good luck. Wicker Guru

wickerguru do you soak the spline as well ?
@skaizun6 жыл бұрын
Most vendors pre-soak the spline, but, it wouldn't hurt to do so, again, in warm water for 10-20 minutes, depending on the length. Always soak the entire spline before you cut it (makes it way easier to handle than individual pieces). Let air-dry for about 10 minutes before working with it. Do not re-soak, unless you are working in a very dry environment, which isn't likely; too much wetting will make the spline spongy and useless.
@warrensmith6315 жыл бұрын
Did you mention that the rattan and spline should be soaked in water for an hour before installation?
@wickerworks-richard38475 жыл бұрын
NO...only soak the rattan webbing for up to 30 mins in warm water, no longer as the rattan will darken and the fibres will become weak. The Spline can be briefly splashed with water just to soften the outer edge before fitting. If you soak...the spline will swell and soften making it impossible to fit.

I have a table I picked up at a yard sale for 3 bucks. I'm dreaming of repairing it but I'm afraid it might be too damaged. I believe it may have gotten wet before i purchased it. When we pulled the old rattan weaving and cane spline off, all around the edges of both bottom and top shelves, the particle board crumbled off. So now there's no groove to work with. Can anyone picture my dilemma? Any advise?
@janepellicciotto61596 жыл бұрын
I chose the right size spline based on a chart I found. But it just seems too thick to fit in the groove once the cane is in there. I have wooden wedges, and even though I have soaked the cane, it doesn't stay in the groove like your video. Do you recommend getting thinner spline? I've now bought cane twice (getting expensive as they require you to buy 5 feet).
@wickerworks-richard38476 жыл бұрын
Jane, What ever the width of the groove you have, say 6 mm, choose a 5 mm cane spline. A 1 mm smaller size than that of the width of the groove will work. If the spline you have is too thick, then you can easily shave off 1 mm using a sharp utility knife. By the way you can dampen the spline but DO NOT SOAK this. If you do, it will swell and make it all but impossible to fit into the groove. If you still have difficulties send me a few pics to: wickerguru@gmail.com
@janepellicciotto61596 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the quick reply! I considered getting a thinner spline but trimming what I have is a good idea. I am soaking the cane. I don't have a nifty tool like yours but I do have wooden wedges. But no amount of hammering them in really keeps the cane deep in the groove like your video. I did make make the mistake of soaking the spline so it's good to know I shouldn't do that. I hadn't thought of the swelling. Makes sense! I'd like to salvage the cane I already have in one chair. I ripped out the spline but the glue is hardening as we speak. When I ripped out the original cane and spline I used the warm vinegar water solution to soften the glue. Should I do something like that again? I don't want to the glue to get too hard before I can get the other spline in.
@wickerworks-richard38476 жыл бұрын
You can use a wooden ice cream stick to push and EASE the rattan into the groove. If you are using PVA wood glue, this can easily be dissolved with warm water. Although by the time you get this message, it may be too late. If you have the correct size spline, you only need to tap this in with a hammer, and it should lay level with the outer edge. Wipe away any excess glue with a damp cloth and allow to dry slow and naturally. Not in the sun or by a heater. Good luck this time around Jane.

I am concerned that using that type of glue will make further repairs impossible. Is it so? I would be inclined to use hide glue, is that silly?

Using PVA wood glue works fine. You really don’t need to use too much glue. It’s easy to remove if you have to repair again.

@@wickerguru Excellent, I think I am ready to take the plunge and fix my old beloved rocker. Thank you for posting, and for your advice.
At 4:00 minutes in video, you are putting glue around the chair, you said to "poor glue" and I was confused for a second. It's "pour glue"...

Ooooooh yes, you're quite right, incorrect spelling. But no idea why you would have been confused for a second?Action speaks louder than words as they say.

You make it look to easy . . . I am afraid to try and recant a chair I picked up at a yard sale.
