How to re program an Intek HR 5500 radio transceiver

The Intek HR-5500, also known as an SS-6900, AT-5555, DX-5000, BR-9000, etc, is a 28MHz radio transceiver, which can be expanded via software to 25.605-30.115MHz.

found how to change bands: Transceiver off. Press and hold the button FUN(upper left)+EMG/SRF(lower right) at the same time and switch the transceiver on. It indicates now: 1band, turn the rotator (right) to put: 2band, then press the button FUN a few seconds until it shows rEs then rEnd. Switch the receiver off and on again, now it has changed to the "lower" band 25,615 - 28,305. This is the expanded range an can be programmed from 25,615 to 30,105 max.

thank you for your nice video - you can also take off the other cover and route the cable under the PCB and out the small hole situated next to the antenna screw, imho this is slightly neater and less likely to wear the cable than taking it through the casing/back route.

What is the difference please between versions ,noticed that rado was version 5, mine is 6? is there much difference in firmware software and are they compatible ,,many thanks shane

Please bear in mind that the Intek 5500 radio can work on 10 meters and 11 meters, all that is required to change bands is to switch off the radio. Hold the S/RF and FUNCTION buttons while turning the radio back on, next you will be given a choice of band 1 or 2, when you have changed the band hold FUNCTION button until END comes up. Turn radio off then on and you have switched bands, this is for version 6, don't know if it is valid for version 5. .

Is that just to change the frequencies and put the ones you want? Do you modify it for the 11 meters just using the power switch and other buttons?

the video is very helpful but would have been a little more instructive if you had told people to reconnect the power lead the speaker and microphone and switching on the power supply after attaching the pc lead into the pc or laptop and switching it on else the radio will not power up took me a little while to figure that out as you forgot to mention that bit and please do not delete my comment as it will be helpful for others who are watching your video and may also wonder why no power is coming from the radio after attaching the lead to pc or laptop then select the read function for the radio to switch to pc mode as I said before the video is very instructive but could have had a bit more information added to make it the most instructive one n you tube for these kind of radios cos there is nothing else on the internet comes close to this one thank you

Hi there. I haven't deleted any comments? But answering the one below, I don't have Windows 7, a v6 radio or the v6 software to troubleshoot for you. When I get a message like that, it's usually because the software is trying to connect using the wrong COM port. Perhaps try a different COM port?

lol, there is nothing wrong with using a ftdi adapter or other generic usb to serial adapter, its totally fine and you dont have to buy a specific radio programming tool, they are just over priced usb to serial adapters! For a while I even had a Hc-06 Bluetooth module hooked up to the programming port and was making changes wirelessly, the hc-06 and hc-05 modules are just serial modules which connect to your PC via Bluetooth instead of USB

Hi Steve. Thanks for the comment. This was a video from 2013, and my recollection was that I had different serial cables which I tried, and they did not work. The only one that worked was the specific one I bought for this. That's not to say I didn't faulty cables, or other cables designed for something else! I don't have this device anymore, or any other cables to try and confirm your comment.

@@TheVisionMixer The programming socket on the radio uses standard 5v Serial. One pin is ground another is TX and the other RX. There is nothing radio specific going on on the programming port and any 5v serial tool will work. If you couldn't get your programmer to work, is it possible you had the Tx and Rx connections the wrong way round? Tx of the programmer needs to go to Rx of the radio and Rx of the programmer needs to go to Tx on the radio. Getting them round the wrong way will not cause any damage but it will not work.
