I hate wasting things, especially potting soil. Today I share with you how to reuse potting soil for your houseplants. Great advice Carmen.I usually do the same thing with my soil from the nurseries, I’ll add the usual perlite, worm castings, charcoal and bark, plus peat moss. The beyond help soil goes in my flower beds, I’m like you I really don’t reuse soil that was in my pots outside, way too afraid of bugs😛💚

Right. We trimmed a few peppers from the garden, cleaned the roots, & replanted them in potting mix. Sure enough, throughout the winter, little critters to include flying ones came out of the soil. I'm sure we did something wrong, but taking plants from outside inside brings the risk of insects. Not really that big a deal in terms of mitigation, and kind of fun to watch, but this type of fun is better suited for a heated garage underneath grow lights. No heated garage, no grow lights, so no more insect fun for us.

That is very “big” perlite! Mine is much smaller...but I’ve switched to pumice mostly. I was surprised you don’t heat it somehow. Thank you for this video. .

Love what you do there! I bought a bag of orchid bark, I was so excited got home to mix and when I opened it,,it was choke full of fungus gnats.,ugh But now I’m having fungus gnats in the house. How to rid of those? Not that many but they fly to other plants. I was so disappointed I threw it outside! It was only $5 I wasn’t taken it back because it would be more gas , lol

Ugh, that's too bad! You can try the sticky strips that are placed in plants to get rid of the gnats. Also, if you sprinkle granules called Mosquito Bits on the plants that have the problem, every time you water that will systemically kill any larvae or eggs in the soil. Hope this helps.

Hi Carmen I just started making and using chunky mix now as well... the only thing is that I noticed when I water my house plants I see dry spots of the soil what do I do to fix this I feel like I was already adding a lot of water from the beginning 🤷‍♀️? Would appreciate the reply.

When you water make sure you rotate the pot so you get water into the entire pot and not just on spot. Hope that makes sense.

Carmen I have a bag of Miracle Grow soil for houseplants that has been opened its about 1/2 a bag, when I went to use it there was a white powder on the top, is this something I should throw away? is it bad? I bought it about 4 months ago.

No, it's just the castings. Funny you should ask, my mom just asked me the exact same question yesterday when I was giving her some revised soil. But, it's safe to use.

You shouldnt recommend that soil taken from a sick plant be reused it should be discarded in the trash or youll be spreading some potentially bad bacteria .Also practice more you put in 5 handfulls if used potting soil not 4.
