I specialise in beach metal detecting, the metal detectors I use are a Garrett ace 200, ace 200i, garrett ace 400, ace 400i and a garrett at pro at pro international. My sons metal detector is a c.scope 440xd which is a great metal detector for children, the cscope teaches kids the basics of how to metal detect. I mostly metal detect at night because I find night metal detecting relaxing. One of the advantages of detecting at night is that you can search the beach undisturbed. I would recommend beach metal detecting at night to anyone providing it is safe for you to detect metal at night. when coin shooting at night I would recommend you take another detectorist with you. One other tip would be to keep one ear exposed so you can hear if anyone is trying to sneak up on you.
my beach finds are mostly coins, rings, gold, silver, jewellery and relics from ww2, bullets buttons, cap badges and parts of crashed ww2 aeroplanes. If I find any Aircraft artefacts they are treated with great respect. I donate any aircraft finds to the wings museum where they will identify and display the aircraft part. I also find musket balls and three ringers,3 ringers fishing weights I have even found Belguim occupation coins from ww2, Canadian coins from ww2 as there were Canadian Soldiers stationed at Worthing and of course the odd unexploded bomb.
at low tide, I can also get in a bit of beachcombing where I find fossils small fish, crabs, wildlife and general historical artefacts.
Detecting metal in wet sand, rock pools and hardpack can be difficult with single frequency machines but I have managed to get the Garrett ace 400i to work on wet sand. I also enjoy coin hunting, coin shooting, finding beach coins finding coins. Metal detecting for coins is great I have found Victorian, Georgian, euros, foreign coins and of course pre-decimal coins. I am always actively treasure hunting and look forward to the day I find buried treasure.
finding treasure is well on my bucket list, I always think there are hidden treasures out on the wet sands and rock pools. There is so much hidden history out there. I enjoy the prospect of finding Worthing's undiscovered history. West Sussex has ancient history including Iron age, Bronze age, Roman, Saxon, and prehistory. the Sussex coastline has produced some historical finds from ww2 history, smuggling history, ancient coins, and of course history from the English civil war. Worthings coastline has changed over the years but out on the wet sands are the remains of lost villages, hamlets, Roman, Saxon, Bronze age, iron age settlements
When I was detecting on land with Andy Wellyman I found a bronze age axe.
2018 I intend to do more metal detecting land as Andy and I have got some new permissions.
our new permissions include meadows and fields and some woodland
I have got many bucket list finds on my metal detecting wish list.
obviously, my dream find would be a pirates treasure chest, we all can have our detecting wish list.
I am impressed with the AT pro and use it most of the time, it has got good depth, one fault with the at pro is it can give a false signal with large iron and lacks the ability to discriminate out large iron signals. I have dug up many scaffold poles left over from the war, they formed part of our coastal defences. The scaffold poles were arranged in a way so they would rip the bottom out of passing landing craft.
I watched every depth test, air test and coil video I could before I committed my self to buying a Garrett at pro. The coin id is spot on. I can call the coin even before I dig it out the vid numbers do the job of sorting out the coins from the trash. I would recommend watching metal detecting videos before you commit yourself to buying any metal detector.
Who knows what metal detecting finds are yet to be found, the prospect of finding lost history is any metal detectorists dream. Whatever your dream finds are they are out there somewhere waiting for a metal detecting discovery to happen.
Good luck and happy hunting
