We can be sure that any yen coins with Showa 1 or Showa 64 year would be high in value. Both years lasted just 7 days each.
@Gumardee_coins_and_banknotes Жыл бұрын
There are no Showa 1 coins minted, but might have test coins, and 64 are fairly common.
@ozgoldebronokia8210 Жыл бұрын
@@Gumardee_coins_and_banknotes For Showa 1, understandable. The year lasted only 7 days and must be a mourning period in Japan anyway. But for Showa 64, did they keep producing the coins until some times after Hirohito has died?

Good video. I knew at one point how to figure out the year, but have gotten lazy and forgot....I've got a box full of japanese, korean, chinese, arabic and other coins I need to attribute at some point.

Thank you mate. The first three are easy, Arabic coins, you need to learn some of the script.

In Japan, keep your eyes out for Heisei 12-14, 22-25 and 28 One Yen coins as they are a lower mintage.
@Gumardee_coins_and_banknotes6 жыл бұрын
I rarely got any Heisei 1 yen coins when I went there. But thank you for letting everyone know.
@Gumardee_coins_and_banknotes6 жыл бұрын
5 yen 18-24 are low mintage, 50 en 12-26 low mint, 100 yen years 13-14. So lots to look for in Japan.
@johnheaney35476 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the low mintage dates! I'll have to see if I have any! Any other dates I should look out for?
@Gumardee_coins_and_banknotes6 жыл бұрын
In the Showa, only the 50 yen of 60-62 are low mintage, all the other coin denominations had high mintages.

Correction to the video: First year of the Showa era was 1926, not 1925. (1926 was also the 15th year of the Taisho era.)

thank you, helped me get the date on my Japanese coin. On the 50 yen, it was written 45. so that is 1971 right?

45 would be 1970.

Think it as an ordinal number. So, the count starts from 1, not 0. 1926 was Showa 1 not Showa 0.
@looikokweng87672 жыл бұрын
Brother, the correct date is MENG CHEE is 1867, SHOWA is 1918 and HEI SEI is 1988..please don't mistaken anymore TQ

I have a question, why half yen coin not in Japanese currency ?
@Gumardee_coins_and_banknotes5 жыл бұрын
1 Yen is equal to 1 cent Australian, so a half yen would be worthless, even in the 1950s it had little value.
@troodon10965 жыл бұрын
It was quite some time ago, but at modern conversion rates there's no point in minting anything smaller than 1 yen. It used to be that 100 sen = 1 yen but coins denominated less than 1 yen haven't been minted since 1948. 1948 (Showa 23) is the last year a 50 sen coin was minted, which was half of 1 yen.
@ozgoldebronokia8210 Жыл бұрын
The Japanese currency has been low in value for a long time. In 1949, the rate for 1 US dollar was fixed at 360 yen. The highest rate for yen was 80-something in 1995. So, there was no need to have coins under 1 yen.
