thank you again for this video , a real pleasure even though I’m not currently learning Italian, but I hope one day. If it’s not too intrusive, How long have you been learning Italian? I love the ways you speak Italian really soft and looks like close to a native italian speaker. bravo 👏
@SheaJordan

Thanks! I speak softly mainly because I’m shy when I talk in Italian 😂😂 but I’ve never done a video where I spoke both English and Italian in the same video so it’s funny to see how much my voice changes haha. I started teaching myself about 4 years ago but really made huge progress after moving to Italy about 2 years ago. That helped my pronunciation and accent a lot.

Actually it’s so cool you have made a video both english and Italian. for my part,that kept me entertaining and enjoying the video. I love the way people keep talking and changing languages.i can understand that liviing in your target country can help you so much due to for the immersion continue and also when the Native only knows their mother tongue you have to deal with it. keep it up , I love it 😊

I’ve been studying Portuguese for 9.5 years now and I’ve visited Brasil 18 times but I still can’t read or converse and I have to translate everything into English to understand. It’s like English words have meanings, images and ideas connected to them but Portuguese words have English words connected to them and they need to be translated. I have been practicing every day with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese and we’ve been practicing for 6.5 years now but I still can’t understand her. I can’t read anything yet because of having to translate everything. It prevents me from using context too

Have you ever read Jhumpa Lahiri, specifically "In Other Words"? She writes in English and Italian, and this particular book explores her own journey learning Italian. I read the English portion, though I'm not quite ready for the Italian portion. Just wondering how you feel about her writing.

My two tips: 1. As someone else has suggested, graphic novels/comic books can be really handy. I don't read them in English, but they definitely helped with Italian. I have a real soft spot for Dylan Dog. 2. When you don't know a word and you decide to look it up, do not look up its translation into your native language. Rather, use a target language dictionary (like Treccani, in Italian). One benefit is that it doesn't disrupt your flow in your target language, and it helps you maintain the mental framework in which the target language is its own thing, not just another version of your native language. You will also, hopefully, come to understand the word's unique shades of meaning, which is sometimes not obviously translateable in a dictionary format. Another benefit is that you will be exposed to useful synonyms, as well as seeing good examples of how it is used.

When you first went to Italy, did you ask people if they speak English? Think I might do this at first, then as time goes on start speaking more Italian.
@SheaJordan
@SheaJordan 5 ай бұрын
Usually I tried to just speak in Italian. Only if there was something that was a bit difficult, like when I went to set up my phone and get a SIM card, I asked if they spoke English because I knew that would probably require vocab I didn't know yet. But usually in a store or restaurant I always tried to speak Italian, and Italians are usually very nice and encouraging!
